Here in America we may complain time to time about "the man", and rightly so, the last 8 years have been such a dark chapter of american history. However, those in China have it far worse than we could ever imagine!!

Just imagine, instead of having to do the pledge of alliegence every morning, what if you had to pledge your life to America?! What if you were not allowed to graduate high school because you had not memorized all of this propaganda saying how you should give your life for the "struggle" of your country?

I am thankful every day for the religious freedoms in this country. I find it astounding that if I were in china and wanted to meditate a certain way (practice Falun Dafa meditation) I would be arrested and tortured or have my organs sold to the rich. History will not forget this, I do not believe heaven will forgive those responsible for such atrocities.

People who are trying to become more selfless and tolerant are not a "threat" to a communisty regime. Communist China has no right to single out one form of ancient chinese belief system for such a brutal persecution. They create lies and slander Falun Gong to justify their oppression of it. We are experiencing something similiar in the western world, with the growing intolerance of muslim extremists, we can not start rounding up muslims who have nothing to do with violence and start putting them into camps and selling their organs to the rich because they refuse to give up their beliefs!!

People in China are waking up to the truth of their capitalistic dictatorship! As of right now Over 27,557,943 People Renounce the CCP. That number grows at least 10 thousand more everyday. Soon even those in power will realize they are on a sinking ship. There can be no world war 3 between the U.S. and China over resources.

Anyone who took the time to read this, I urge you to act on behalf of your own conscious. Please sign petitions, speak up, post blogs do whatever you feel is appropriate...but do something please! Human rights violations must be stopped!! http://www.humanrightstorch.org/

pharmacists are living under a dictatorship in WA

All this about religious freedom and personal freedom makes me wonder: how can people dictate what small businesses do and limit freedom of a certain professional group. Pharmacists are a marginalized group now subject to a dictatorship, but only here in Washington. America was built on the back of small mom and pop businesses and freedom and people going out and getting educations and practicing a trade as best as they saw fit. We have choices here, Walgreen's is on every corner and open 24/7 but that's not enough. Bad in China, good in Washington. Weird logic.
»

What??

America was founded by male landowners who were rich enough that they weren't scared of the king anymore. Not exactly mom and pop.

The American Revolution was less of a revolution, and more of a change in management.

»

???

Last time I witnessed a change in management there were no muskets involved...or a war for that matter.

nice try

Operating a pharmacy requires a license. A license comes with restrictions as well as rights. Let's take getting your license to drive a car, for example. When you get your Washington driver's license you are awarded the legal right to drive a car (while insured) in the U.S. Does this mean that you can now drive anywhere you please using any kind of vehicle you'd like? Are you now allowed to drive on the sidewalk, for example? Are you permitted to drive a motorcycle? A mac truck?

The purpose of pharmacy licensing and oversight reaches back to the days of elixirs and tonics. While Doc's Aches & Pains Wonder Tonic may make the pain go away, bottling up some hooch and selling it at a pharmacy as a medication is not my idea of a quality pharmaceutical system. If mom & pop don't want to abide by the licensing restrictions that would allow them to open a pharmacy, then mom & pop can stick to selling baseball cards and sugared donuts.

All true, but the Pharmacy

All true, but the Pharmacy Boards language for "good faith" is open.  Unless the board is explicit in what a pharmacy must stock I think it really falls to the market.

I think I saw you today with your daughter on Capitol Way across from Archibald Sister's around 9:50a or so.

within the market

To a degree. After all, it doesn't matter whether or not the market thinks booze is a good muscle relaxer, a pharmacist license doesn't allow the pharmacist to sell it. But I'm not sure what that has to do with the bogus argument that pharmacists in Washington are working under the precepts of a dictatorship.

In the end it's a business owner's choice whether or not to apply for the necessary licensing to operate a pharmacy. Once that choice is made then the business owner is subject to a given set of liberties and restrictions. Give and take, give and take.

And yup, that was probably us. We were toolin' around town getting as much Vitamin D in as possible while the sun still shines.

»

Absolutely.

Absolutely.

In the end it's a business

What if the rules are changed after the business applies for the license though?

Then why is there so much

Then why is there so much "grandfathering" in our society?

Tear it down!

I'm with you eregular! Let's call the white house and have the troops sent to China. We'll show those good-for-nothing commies how things are supposed to be run, and kill some civilians while we're at it! Human rights violation should not be tolerated, so let's go to war!!!

Seriously, are we going to hear about China, their human rights violations, and the Olympics until the games are over? It's really going to get old before then.

Oh come on.  Fucked-up-shit

Oh come on.  Fucked-up-shit and every other swear word in the book doesn't describe what's going on over there.  We certainly ought to be concerned about it.  That doesn't mean going to war, but it does mean that maybe we ought to think twice about giving China "Most Favored Nation" trade status... year after year after year.

Give the guy a break, Norm.  He's doing something important.

So what are you going to do about it?

Sign a petition? Create a blog? NONE of that is going to stop human-rights violations ANYWHERE. I don't honestly believe you are that delusional Phil. Honestly, I think the guy should pump his efforts into something that will get better results, because this thread isn't going to do anything for the people of China.

China will continue to do what they do until someone stops them. The Chinese citizens cannot, the UN will not, what other options are there? Oh yeah, let's create a petition and hope that Hu Jintao and the communist party reads it and has a change of heart. Let's be real here Phil.

The US is among the largest

The US is among the largest consumers of Chinese made products.  Our trade policies give China a green light to go ahead with its abuses.  US trade policy could very definately make a difference for human rights in China.

As for changing US policy (and I should add consumer practices), yes, I do believe that eregular is making a difference.  Change takes a long time, and requires perseverance, patience, creativity, stick-to-it-ness, and gumption.  At the very least, eregular has perseverance, stick-to-it-ness, and gumption going in her/his favor.

Besides that, the Chinese human rights movement actually has some pretty strong allies in the US government, including John McCain (who made Chinese trade status a platform issue in his 2000 campaign).  It will take time, but they really could pull it off.

Spoken like a true social worker

Just kidding, Phil.

I don't think anybody in America can do anything about whats happening in China. If we stop trading with them, the treatment will get even worse as the workers won't be making profits for the bosses. The Chinese are going to have to stand up and say no more. Which in some cases they are starting to do. I'm optimistic about China. That many people can't be held down for too long, not in the modern world.

»

We could argue about this until death

So instead, let's place a beer on it. I'll bet you a beer, that within our lifetime, the Chinese will not change their human rights views. Care to place that wager?
»

Don't you already owe me a beer for

Apartheid bet? And one short lifetime ago, no one would have bet that China's unleashed capitalist running-dogs would turn it into a market-based economic superpower. And as we saw in the old soviet block, things can change very quickly.

I was talking to Phil :PI

I was talking to Phil :P

I told you I'd buy you a whiskey, for your chastising Rob about calling out drunks, not that I owed it to you though.

Change can happen, but I'm willing to bet a beer against it for China. I think the next step for China is a hostile takeover once they decide to push the wrong country around. If you'd like in on the bet, let me know.

Because folks who praise the free market

are all-too-willing to abandon it the second they get a chance to save their skin. Psssst. We live in a free-market society when it is convenient.

We're getting way off topic,

We're getting way off topic, and we still need to teach you to push the reply button :p

Hopefully, in the end, if pharmacies are forced to dispense certain meds, they just shut down their business and find another niche.

the market is why the u.s. won't condemn china

its sad...once again peoples lives and blood are being traded for profit...the only source of true income...
