Black Houses

I just got back from a mega walk around the neighborhood and couldn't help but notice that all black houses have overgrown lawns. I mean - every single one of them (and there's ALOT of them)!

I've heard that all of the houses are painted black because of the owner is mad at the city for not letting him paint a house a certain color (I can't quite remember the details). I don't know if that's true or just Oly lore. But is there also a thing about not mowing the lawn, too?

I lived in black houses for years

Duane is a weird and mercurial guy, but the houses are the best places to live in town without a doubt.

There are a number of black houses around Olympia

Someone here will provide the details and locations I'm sure. But I immagine the long grass has more to do with the renters than the owner.

word from some of Duane's renters is that he requests that they do NOT mow the lawn. Why, you ask? Because this, along with the paint colors on the houses (black and, now, school-bus yellow) drive down the property value (supposedly).

As for the addresses of houses, it seems (at least to me) to be rather strange/creepy to distribute that kind of info in public space like this. Walk/bike/drive around (especially on the eastside, north of 4th) and you'll find many of them)

I like that idea

Cruise around Olympia, you'll find them, good idea.

Nothing nefarious...

I just wanted to map the houses out and see what kind of images I can create. Just looking for a short cut. Nearest intersection or land mark would work just fine. Does that sound considerably less creepy.

more slender clues

few more house names from past OlyBlog post

Olympian did an article about the houses back in 2004 but looks like the article can't be accessed freely anymore online at Olympian site, someone could look it up through alternate means

I heard an Oly urban legend

I heard an Oly urban legend about this Black Houses which I am sure isn't true but would be funny if it was...

I heard if you draw lines from each Black House on a map that the lines form a pentagram.

I'd like to see someone try it.

I've heard that one two

Who knows the addresses of the black houses?

Ask Louis Bloom or the Assessor of Thurston County

78201201000 MOORE, DUANE 85400 1135.86 0.1 0 2026 OLYMPIA HWY N STESHELTON
52001900300 MOORE, DUANE S 105200 1399.21 0.17 1901 2026 OLYMPIC HWY N STESHELTON
52001900200 MOORE, DUANE S 16200 215.46 0.17 0 2026 OLYMPIC HWY N STESHELTON
54200900002 MOORE, DUANE STEPHEN 397100 5281.61 0.3 0 2026 OLYMPIC HWY N STESHELTON

Throw the parcel numbers into this:

and you will have some addresses.

Then do a tour, figure out an address not on the list above, and see what other business entity names you can then search, for more addresses. Not as much work as going around finding all of them by foot, but still some foot work to be done.

By the way, the disc with all the current data can be got for $5.00 (CD duplication cost) from the Assessor. They will try to get you to pay hundreds to the GIS department. Don't be fooled. Show them the photocopy of Louis Bloom's document request. By the way, the cops have this database linked to GIS software on their laptops. Imagine what stalkers they could be if they had a personal beef with you!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Whenever I see those houses...

...I hear "Black Hole Sun" in my head.

I heard they're all owned by a dentist is Shelton... Thad

Best wishes,

The dentist from Shelton thing is true

the pentagram thing is not.

Oh, says who?

Or perhaps when you connect the dots, they look like a smoking dog. Addresses people...I want addresses.

I'll bet they definitely make...

...a dog smoking a cigarette.

you know what that would mean

I SOOOO already said that!

I know...

...I was just affirming your post. Although I could go back and make your post disappear.

Dogs and Cigarettes

If someone is crazy enough to supply me with the map points, I'll see what I can do.

Confused? Start here.

Duane Moore

More on Black Houses and owner, make sure to read comments too. Last I heard he also owns or co-owns The Manium.

Addition: the links given here also do lead to urban myths, Oly legends etc.

Speaking of the black

Speaking of the black houses, it appears the person that was just arrested by the FBI for alleged eco-terrorism lived in a black house, and Duane Moore wrote a character reference letter for him. Weird coincidence of the day.

Always though he was a black house kind of guy

Didn't know him at all, but seen him around town in his funny hat and other accuterments. Bummer for him.

Why on Earth would anybody write this guy? I'm sure that's a great way to get your name on the FBI most watched list not to mention law abiding citizens don't write inmates...

JPO, wanna clarify that a bit?

"not to mention law abiding citizens don't write inmates." You might want to elaborate on your idea, here. I think it would be easy to misconstrue your intended thought.

In What Way?

As a law abiding citizen, I wouldn't write this guy or any other inmate. I didn't write any family member I might have that was ever incarcerated either.

I'm all for innocent until proven guilty but this guy was arrested by the FBI. I'm sure they'll be monitoring any visitors or persons corresponding with him.  I sure wouldn't want to be associated with that or have my reputation looked into as a possible ELF associate.

But surely you must admit that... abiding folks do write to inmates and that doing so doesn't make one "non-law abiding"?

OK, I See Your Point

Yes, some law abiding people do write inmates, but very few would have any interest in writing an inmate that's been accused of being an ELF member. But knock yourself out Drew, if that's your thing.

Here's one reason for some folks

From Matthew chapter 25: 34-40

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world.  For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

“And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’

Holy Moses!

Scripture quoting is one sure fire way to get people's blood boiling. Try it at a pro choice rally sometime.

Quoting scripture at a pro-choice rally... intended to get people's blood boiling, don't you think?

Let's play God's Advocate

Let's play God's Advocate for a moment. What's good for the uninterested or noncompassionate freeperson should be good for the pro choice activist. Or for whomever else scripture may be fired at, such as gay people.

My thinking behind my comment was that we should be careful when using Scripture to make our points. Personally I loved the point made by quoting Matthew. But if I accept that, what reason do I have not to accept Bible Bigot Jim's yearly tirades?

added: As a Municipal Judge in Shelton once told me, You can't have it both ways [Ms. Eddy].

I'm not "firing" scritpure at anyone.

Using your logic, we cannot quote anyone, because there is always another writer with a contrary view who can be quoted by the other side. Someone asked, why write to a man arrested by the FBI? I provided her, a fellow Christian (at least in name), something she might appreciate.

It's possible you mistook

It's possible you mistook me. While I believe there were multiple contributors to the Bible many Christians find it to be solely the Word of God. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and even Zeppo only went through the motions.

Therefore I wasn't saying we couldn't quote the bible "because there is always another writer with a contrary view who can be quoted by the other side." I hadn't been quoting Anton LeVey dontcha know. And actually I wasn't bringing up contrary views, I was bringing up content unrelated except for the source.

The Bible tells us to show compassion to the down-trodden, to love our enemy, to turn the other cheek. The Bible blesses the fruits of the womb. The Bible hates certain people for who they are. The Bible supports separation of Races.

I have no choice but to pick and choose which parts of The Bible I like. If I use my choices based on the power and goodness of the source, what right would I have to tell my contrarian they're same source is invalid?

Is anyone's blood boiling over scripture I quoted?

Speak up. Don't let your negative feelings simmer.

I can think of some good scripture for a pro-choice rally.  Like James 4:11-12:

Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law... who are you to judge your neighbour?

Not mine

I think it's very zen. Or whatever religion it is that emphasizes compassion.

Isaiah 49:15Can a woman

Isaiah 49:15

Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.

And the more important Jeremiah 1:5

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee

I have more for another thread when necessary.

Whoa. Ok this is getting off-topic...

...let's get back to black houses, folks!

Yes, yes, yes. Back to the black houses.

I'm done with the scripture thingy.

Yes, my apologies.Those

Yes, my apologies.

Those houses must get awfully hot. I would hate to be doing roof work in this weather.

Unfortunatly JPO has got a point

Don't y'all think the FBI will check your shit out if you are so stupid as to write someone they think is a terrorist? Sad but true.

Only if you stupid enough to provide a full name and address

If I sign my letter, "Laurian, the curmudgeonly Olympia actor,” I doubt they would ever come near me.

I know this piece of the thread is off topic

but i cannot help replying.

Brian is a friend of mine, a brilliant artist and dancer and a kind person. I wholeheartedly believe he has no connection to this.

Anyone following green scare victims and cases knows that many are built on suppressing exonerating evidence and witness intimidation in the form of legal threats against alleged "co-conspirators".

I don't know how his name came to their attention but I sincerely hope he is allowed to return to his friends and community with a lengthy apology.

If your friend is swept up and arrested by a group known to arrest without cause or on slim evidence one day out of the blue, you wouldn't at least write to him? To suggest that my letters are somehow uncalled for because he's in jail is truly cold and betrays a real callous in your character.

The FBI can put me on as many of their lists as they want. I'm not letting a friend and a community member sit in prison alone with no support. I can't believe what some people on the internet say sometimes...

person who wrote that blog

seems like a real peach.

Black Houses myspace

Black houses

I don't see addresses here G. but will post if I find them. A few of the house names can be found here.

Black for solar gain, the black isn't a passive solar scheme?

darn that voodoo science =)

Why should someone have to mow a lawn? That "overgrowth" is a part of nature. I prefer "overgrown" native plants to a fake mowed lawn. Lawns are a waste of water and look stupid. But I guess it's a matter of perception.
