After the comments in the post about my husband I am through. I will make one last challenge that ... even though that many people on this blog do not support that war that you respect the soliders.

The insults and remarks made about my husband are bull.. and I frankly want nothing to do with it. I was hoping to enlighten people about another view point. However, there are too many people on here who want to slam my husband... and therefore me because he is a soldier.

The majority of people are misinformed about the war, the job of the soldiers, and what is actually occuring over there. I encourage people to step back...

I will continue on with my life without being spoken to like I am a half wit... who is brain washed by the Army. My husband isnt a liar and probably would be friends with many of the haters on here because you wouldnt even know he was a soldier until he brought it up.

I am deeply saddened by the comments of some on this site. I highly doubt I will ever return because the disrespect for a soldier is something I DONT TAKE LIGHTLY....

"It’s hard to put those, those feelings and emotions into words. I mean, it, it—they’re so, they’re so complex and because they’re,   someone who trains, someone’s who is a soldier and who’s mission is to save you and, and that person goes in there and does it, and accomplishes a mission, if you’re on the receiving end of that, it’s, it’s (unintelligible) on a mission. I mean, it’s your life and you, you owe these people, I owe these people my life. And they’re, they’re, they’re the finest of the finest, they’re the best of the best. Um, I had to see them before I left. I had to. "

Leaving because of drew

Leaving because of drew would be silly. You're better than that and you know it. Although you tend to appeal to people's emotions ( good in my eyes ) this post is too dramatic for you. Give it a few days, enjoy your weekend and don't sweat the thoughts of one person on this blog. You have a few of us who disagree with you, a few of us who agree with you, a few of us who back you up whenever we can, and a bunch of us that fit into all of those categories at different times. Don't let one person dictate your presence here.

I agree...:)

I agree...:)

What Norm said.

What Norm said.
»

I agree :)

Norm is right on.

And it is even possible that if you and Drew sat down in person and talked, you two might find things in common, or not, but I bet there is some common ground somewhere.

Most of us at some point have learned that we gotta walk away from a conversation here, not sweat it, not take things to heart, even when we feel passionate about the issue. Okay to take a break, also to pick and choose what we read and what we don't read. This blog is a community of diverse individuals, including you, all welcome.

I liked how you and I had a moment awhile back where in the middle of a difficult conversation, we heard each other. And I've seen that happen with other folks since. Plus, it really is okay if sometimes we disagree.

In fact I was going to ask you, if you are willing, to write for us what your experience is. Whatever you are feeling. Focus on you, how you get through the days and nights, how you keep your relationship with your husband alive, your experiences.

Because no matter what any of us think, no matter whether we disagree with the war or not, we aren't taking that away. That is yours. You own that, and I believe we can all learn from each other when we tell our stories, the stories that come from our hearts and minds and experiences.

Reminds me of what I've been taught about communication. Telling my story, focus on my experience, without blaming anyone else or making it about what they supposedly are doing to me, makes all the difference. Sometimes this is called using "I messages."

Your passion is important, it is yours. All of us have this, we can share our personal stories, without insisting that anyone else be any different. All of our stories and experiences and emotions are valid.

As Arnold once said.....

you'll be back.  Your conservative overlords compel you to visit these mostly progressive blogs and spew your nonsense to those that put up with it.  Perhaps someone here will say something particularly nasty and you can post it to the conservative blogs, but I know this, you will be back.  So much of the conservative blogsphere is made of particularly inflamitory remarks from progressive blogs.  Admit it, you need us to get riled up and have some original material for the conservative blogs.  It is sad, however, you have made some honest and good points in the past when you were not sucking up to the conservative overlords.

LOL

Someday, I hope to meet these overlords. I'm assuming they are Sith at this point, but I hate making assumptions.

Crenshaw is the man........

.......and he knows the mysteries of the overlords.

Can we bribe him to put in a good word for us?

^@^

Psh - you both know

Psh - you both know perfectly well that *I* am the overlord of all overlords.

Norm

We blew it man, we did not properly acknowledge the overlord of overlords........OperaGirl! Do you think we can come up with some excuse that she will believe? Can I blame you and then you can blame me?

Don't tell her that we are having this conversation, maybe she won't notice.

O

OOverlords, OlyBlog, Olympia, OperaGirl, Olympian, Oldsmobile: All OlyBlog topics starting with the letter "O." Something is up with this. Something "Odd."

wOw

Overwhelming.

Obviously it is best to err on the side of caution, we better practice being obsequious to OperaGirl just in case.

Or are we just obsessed?

Someone (or something) once offered an obscure observation: that when humans say "O", they tend to hold still and are then more easily caught.

(Notice that I didn't write anything about you know what, at least not overtly.)

What can I say other than

What can I say other than "Oooops"?
»

Oh, please!

Armywife, I know a tantrum when I hear one, and I can smell a full diaper when the aroma travels.

If you want to have this discussion, you will either have to choose your pain, or your politics. You seem to have mixed both, and expect us to concede a point which is political (support the troops and have us believe that your husband is doing the right thing) by justifying it with your emotions (you miss your husband, want him safely back, and you believe he is doing the right thing). That's not fair argument, that is baiting and switching, a common tactic in propaganda. And "storming off," claiming to be personally insulted by a political, non personal point is just childish behavior. You opened the can of worms, you injected your political view into an ongoing discussion, you claimed your husbands' acts were all virtuous, and that WE were the brainwashed, ill-informed masses, bleating our antiwar protests to make you feel bad and the soldiers feel bad. When I point out the reality of the situation, you want to hear none of it. B.S. The conversation goes BOTH WAYS.

I'm an anti-imperialist, Armywife. I'm not suddenly going to forget that just because you're missing your soldier husband. I'm not going to put your pain above that pain suffered by the Iraqi truck driver who lost both his daughters - doctors both - in the first month of the second Iraq war.

And you have NEVER answered the question - Do you support empire? Yes, or No?

»

Threatened by emotions any?

Methinks the man doth protest too much. Is he afraid that emotions will overwhelm him and his anti-imperialist program? Can he make a his argument and yet not offend?
»

:)

And can we hear him, and not be offended?

I can see how what Drew is writing can seem unduly harsh and offensive. But I can also read his words as straight up and him telling it like it is for him, and that they aren't automatically offensive at all.

No, some of us can't. I had

No, some of us can't. I had a great big long list of things that I was going to say, but I'll save it for when he shows up to the broho.
»

infiniti

You, my friend, will be waiting for a LONG time if you expect me at the BroHo on a Monday evening... I am so often waylaid by the fates of meetinglife that Mondays are perpetually overbooked, automagically.
Might I suggest the same venue, on a night other than the one mentioned? Perhaps find a friend with a copwatch pin and give me a jingle?

Whoa, nellie!

It is dangerous to lurk about on the shoals of second guessing one's mate's emotions, motives, or morals at any remove from his confidence.

If you wish to ask whether I can cater to a person's emotions, honest expressed, the answer is yes - but this is not the forum for that. If you need a hug, you'll get none from this blog fer cripes* sake.

Conversation goes both ways

I think this is a key. The conversation has to go both ways. And the conversation isn't about winning. We can all disagree without it feeling like a win-lose offensive-defensive situation.

We can acknowledge each other's pain and still speak clearly and directly about our perspectives on the war. Our pain, our emotions, are our own, they aren't diminished or disrespected when someone disagrees with our perspective.

If you're coming on OlyBlog

If you're coming on OlyBlog to "win" a debate, you're probably at the wrong place.

And by the very definition, I'm probably "losing" quite a bit of these exchanges.

As a sidenote: The blog has helped me understand progressive viewpoints a lot. In fact, I bring them out during lecture discussions quite a bit.

This is what I was telling a friend the other day: College is nothing more than paying for information. As students we're simply paying for a qualified individual (academically and/or professionally) to share the information within their head. In my opinion it's quite absurd, but this is the price we have determined information and ideas are worth.

you have my vote

I nominate TFI for supreme conservative overlord.  Brilliant post, TFI, conservatism I can get behind, though I may be a bit leary of it getting behind me.  Seriously, I agree completely.  I find myself using TFI arguements when making my progressive points, not to tear down the conservatives, but to improve my own progressive position.

Can we have an empire support poll?

Do you support empire building (e.g. Iraq invasion/occupation)?

Yes

or

No

»

I, for one, support the

I, for one, support the Empire State Building. It has stood for a very long time and I hope it is never taken down, by terrorists or, by corporate means.
»

Ha ha ha

That is really funny! Until you think of all the hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians whose lives and families have been destroyed by the imperial invasion there.
»

We cannot have an imperial

We cannot have an imperial invasion without having an emperor.
»

If I understand Norm

If I understand Norm correctly, I actually a bit with him on this one. The words "Empire", "Imperial", and "Imperialism" don't work well to describe U.S. policy. No one in the U.S. wears a royal crown, and we frankly aren't colonizing. Maintaining military and economic dominance? Certainly. Is this a bad idea? Definately. But to describe it as "empire building" is an exaggeration that undermines our credibility. We are occupying Iraq, not claiming to own it.
»

Hmmm, that I may be able to

Hmmm, that I may be able to agree with. How about "Global Occupation" ? or American occupationalism. We are not an empire. It just doesn't make sense to me. The wording of empire building is the reason I cracked the joke. In all seriousness I don't find it funny how much we are dabbling into others affairs.
»

A difference without a distinction

Phil, you wrote "We are occupying Iraq, not claiming to own it."

I disagree - when you claim the right to shoot people who don't follow your traffic signs, you either own the country or you're smoking methamphetamine, or both.

What is the difference between a President, declared so, who was not elected - and a King, declared so, who was also not elected and does exactly as this 'president' does? I'd say not much at all.

»

The difference being, you

The difference being, you are not nearly as crafty as "Robin Hood" and you would have been beheaded LONG ago if georgie were like that of a king. He is the president, he was elected ( I don't care if you choose to believe this or not, he's there, people voted for him, get over it ) and, unlike a king, he will be gone here in a few years when we vote somebody else in. God forbid it's a republican because I'll have to read things like this from you for another 4 very, very long years.

"Damn the man, save the empire."

Farewell Army Wife! May a blanket of protection cover you in this time of need.

Just to put it all in context

Must be like if we get out of Iraq now then all chaos will break out. armywife is just coming back to save us from ourselves. Thank you, armywife, for coming back to save all the marijuana smoking, soldier spitting on, godless hippies. Your sacrifice is duly noted and your service is appreciated by a grateful nation.

Before I got to Olympia I was a Mormon, now look at me, at least I got to keep my bicycle and the black slacks and tie with white short sleeve shirt should come back into style. That or I could get a job with the Geek Squad.
