While walking downtown, I stopped by Compass Rose to buy new chopsticks...for popcorn. I call it popchopping and it keeps any toppings off my fingers as well as makes eating popcorn so much fun! Give it a try.
From The Vegan Chef:
Cajun Popcorn
1 cup raw popcorn kernels
2 T. safflower oil
1 T. water
1 T. nutritional yeast flakes
1 T. Creole Seasoning
1/4 t. salt (optional)
Using a hot air popper or other popcorn popper, pop the popcorn and place it in a large bowl. In a small saucepan, combine the remaining ingredients, and cook over medium heat for 1-2 minutes to blend the flavors. Drizzle the oil mixture over the popcorn and toss well to evenly coat the popcorn with the mixture. Serve warm.
Serves 6-8
Creole Seasoning
3 T. paprika
2 T. garlic powder
2 T. onion powder
1 T. dried basil
1 T. dried oregano
1 T. cayenne pepper
1 T. freshly ground black pepper
1 T. white pepper
1 1/2 t. dried thyme
1 t. dry mustard
In a small bowl, stir together all of the ingredients. Store in an airtight container in a cool place.
Yield: 3/4 cup
The Vegan Chef site has some wonderful ideas for recipes and you can search for recipes with an ingredient keyword...don't miss it!

Tickets include up to
two consecutive movies
and a prize drawing
|
The prestigeous Olympia Film Society, located at the Capitol Theater in downtown Olympia, offers a free ticket to up to two
consecutive movies, free popcorn, and free coffee or soda to volunteer ticket sellers and ticket takers. I was recently granted the
opportunity to interview Kendra Hadlock, OFS Volunteer Coordinator, and Barbara, who has volunteered at the OFS for over ten
years, about the rewarding experience of ticketing at the Olympia Film Society:
C: Kendra, what are the opportunities available for those who want to volunteer to ticket at the Olympia Film
Society?
Kendra: Ticketers can volunteer Monday through Saturday, at 5:45 & 8:15 and Sundays at 1:45, 5:45, &
8:15 - Find an open shift on the volunteer signup sheet on the west wall of the Capitol Theater lobby. Sundays are often open, but
we really also need help with ticketing at live events. There is a live events sign up in the lobby as well. Available positions are
selling tickets and tearing tickets.
C: How much time should a prospective volunteer plan to set aside for each volunteer opportunity?
Kendra: One hour for regular film screenings, longer for live events (but then you get in for free!)

Peggy, an Olympia community member for nearly 4 years, died yesterday at the ripe old age of nearly 7. Old, that is, for a guinea pig. Peggy liked raisins, timothy hay, and grapes. She is loved and will be missed very much.

This is to find out if there is interest on OlyBlog in creating a more wholistic view of how social justice, peace, environment, and other issues interrelate. Sometimes I feel alienated by the presentation of issues of sustainability in Olympia without mention of vegetarian diet, and I feel that the mention of peace without a view which addresses local poverty or animal rights actually helps perpetuate the habit of stratification rather than alleviates it.
When visiting the Emma Goldman Finishing School in Seattle, I admired the way they would create community by offering a monthly potluck with a themed presentation related to social justice along with a vegetarian potluck to support sustainability and prevent needless suffering in animals. By contrast, my experiences in interacting here in Olympia has been that the organizations I've explored pretty much pick a cause rather than addressing the root of stratified thinking. This results in unsustainable fundraisers that also victimize animals to support organizations that may be very effective and adept at addressing issues related to human suffering or the arts, or education, etc, and I have difficulty investing where I see one injustice perpetuated to support a relatable, but as of yet not related in practice, cause.

Hillside Quickie is a vegan restaurant chain based in Seattle. The concept for the menu reflects a focus of the progressive HipHop movement to improve the diets of people of color. You can read more about that here.
Although nothing can compare to actually eating at one of the restaurants, you can find out what a food revolution tastes like by stopping into the Olympia Food Coop for a flavorful and healthy sandwich. Look for them in the refrigerator case.
