Cross posted at Olympia Time

The Olympian this morning pointed out the difference between Olympia's youth outreach efforts and the Tumwater youth program. Olympia recently cut their $30,000 or so program because it didn't attract much of a following and Tumwater's $120,000 program is roaring along.

In addition to the obvious difference in budget, one reason why Tumwater's is working while Olympia's failed is summed up here and with a couple of maps:

Great post.......

.......and I very much agree. Neighborhood drop in centers would be great.

Nice observation.

Where would be a better place for an Oly teen drop in center?

West side

The old Rainy Day Records location would be great except for the fact that I've heard the leases in that complex are too high. Plus having a little land for gardening might be nice to have with the drop in center.

I wonder how much that now vacant lot across the way costs.

I like the idea of having several drop in centers, including one on the west side.

no new building

We don't need to build a new space or even use an old commercial space for a teen center. Schools, high schools, middle schools are for some reason closed after around 5p. In many towns they're the largest buildings, and totally unused for the balance of the evening. I say, if we really want to do this right, have at least two, (maybe three) drop in centers. One on the Westside, either at Jefferson Middle of Capital High; Eastside at Oly High or Washington Middle and the maybe one down at the Knox building.
