Ignorant Movie Review:  The Lives of Others.

Response to title:  A movie about a voyeur? Scathing commentary on our audience culture? It sounds...suspenseful.

Response to curbside poster:  As I walked up to this poster I couldn't help but notice that, like Kudzu, the white letters of critics' praise subsumed whatever visual had previously announced this film. I decided not to look at it.

Response post-credits:  Early in the film's reel a conversation takes place between a celebrated East German author and a blacklisted Director wherein the Director likens a Director with nothing to direct to a projector with no film; such a state of existence renders them both into nothing. That's where I found my key. Set in 80's era East Germany The Lives of Others strikes me as a phenomenological investigation into the existence of goodness and identity. What is a writer? What is a patriot? Who is your mail carrier? What's the name of a ball? Every identified person and object in this film has her/his/its identity challenged. The classic identity conceit of a play-within-a-play is even modernized.

I have now seen two movies through O.F.S. that I would call my second favorite (The Shadow Army).   The Lives of Others is in German with English subtitles, so if you hate subtitles then I wouldn't recommend this movie. Otherwise? I want everyone to be able to see this film. In my mind, it's a masterpiece of modern cinema.

Rating:  4.9etc. out of 5 Oly Stubbies.
