Ignorant Movie Review:  The Host

Response to title:  Had somebody not let slip in conversation that this is a horror-comedy I would've continued thinking I was going to see an art house film about some gregarious party thrower.

Response to curbside poster:  A monster movie with tentacles, yes!

Response post-credits: I'm confused. Which is not to say I didn't enjoy this movie, because I did, but I'm still confused and I think it has to do with my lack of knowledge regarding South Korean family dynamics and death traditions. The symbolism I did understand throughout the film certainly seems to center on the deleterious results of U.S. culture, pollution and military intervention in Korea.

As always, I wouldn't recommend this movie to people who hate subtitles, Korean is the primary language. I was tempted to say that I wouldn't recommend this to people who dislike foreign criticism of America; however, I've changed my mind as I think it would be beneficial for such folks to see how we are viewed abroad. If you like monster movies this is a must see, as the beast is absolutely fantastic and its scenes beneath the bridge are awe inspiring. If you like Sam Raimi's movies about the Evil Dead I would also highly recomend this film; though it doesn't rate as high on the silly meter The Host judiciously metes out some great laughs.

Rating:  3.85 out of 5 Oly Stubbies.

In my experience with Raimi silly = genius.

He is pretty darn good,

He is pretty darn good, that's for sure. You put a bug in my head and I ended up putting "Evil dead" and "night of the living dead" on my queue for netflix. I haven't seen either in awhile and they are both classic.
