the flick's posterIgnorant Movie Review: Mutual Appreciation

Response to title: Well, the title is certainly ambiguous enough: could be about the film's characters (happy happy, they all enjoy each other), could be referencing the audience (the movie likes us, so we should like it!), could be about symbiosis. Whatever, I like the title.

Response to curbside poster: Booze, music, laid out woman, sit-up guy. I have no idea what Funny Ha Ha was about. Nice cursive. I think this'll be a modern day hipster flick (cool, but not too cool; clean, but not too clean).

Response post-credits: A cinéma vérité experience, Andrew Bujalski gives us candid moments with a music artist (who has "it") and his immediate entourage before the recognition.  Imagine a Pop Rock singer/songwriter, newly bandless, moves to New York (home of one friend) to establish himself; this is our view of plucky protagonist Alan, the talented and lazy-but-likable bohemian musician, mix in a bit of awkward romance and voilà, Mutual Appreciation.  By itself the storyline is mostly underwhelming (been there, seen that, read it 50 times), but where this movie shines is in the truth of its dialogue.  Cute witticisms are just that, cute not contrived.  Uncomfortable silences between characters aren't just something to watch, you feel uncomfortable, and not in that Liv Tyler-Ben Affleck Armageddon Animal Cookie way, either.  In other words, the dialogue is natural, minimal and beautiful (think Hemingway), and makes the movie something I'd like to watch again.  Bravo Bujalski.  Now I want to see your first flick.

Rating:  4.59 out of 5 Oly Stubbies.

How much does it cost to go

How much does it cost to go see these films?  (Yes, I know I need to get out more!  Ha ha!)

depends

Membership information. With a membership it's 4.50 for a ticket which gets you into both movies (same night). Without a membership it's $7 for the ticket (double feature included). I think there's a matinée price as well, but I don't know it (I only know the stuff around the lone time I can make it). And it's a 501(c)(3), so there's a partial tax refund in it for you.

Natural dialogue

I found it interesting that, although many scenes are drawn from real life, the improvisational-sounding dialogue is very much scripted.

remarkable writing

Andrew Bujalski is an excellent dialogue writer. I can't stress that enough. And he gets really good performances out of his actors.
