So I've read what other people on OlyBlog have written. I've read the Olympian. I've exchanged a few e-mails with some of our City Councilmen. And I've been letting it all stew in my gray matter. So here're my thoughts on working within the community to counter the negative publicity of downtown Olympia:

  • Redevelop the Sound Hours program as an incentive for voluntary downtown cleanup year round.  The Hours would need to be redeemable at all downtown Olympia businesses (part of the price of doin' business in downtown Oly, like paying for that "environmental maintenance worker" now).
  • An open call for local artists to develop positive image reinforcement pieces for potential mass distribution (read: propaganda for good).
  • The creation of more housing downtown (across the income spectrum).
  • An outdoor stage for theater, political stumping, protests, impromptu performances, etc.
  • Municipal WiFi.  Seriously, as a city we should be investing in technology that will increase the odds of future income sources.
That's where I'm at right now.  I think it's a given that we should not enact further laws detrimental to marginalized populations.

Yes

I like your ideas. I think we should pick one and see what we can do.

I think you're right

One at a time. Although, there's supposedly a local group working on WiFi...that should make it down to an OlyBlog event or two. I think the solo street cleaner right now is pretty inefficient, on multiple fronts. I'd like to see a local currency thrive. Big time.

The enpen 5-thesis: While I'm still reflecting on your proposal (and promise feedback when I have more waking brain cells), I wanted to say "hoorah".  You've observed well and certainly got my thoughts stirring. Three suggested texts, from my shelf and yours for the borrowing at your request:

1) Daniel Kemmis, Community and the Politics of Place (former mayor of Missoula, MT, bastard city of Montana)

2) Gunn and Gunn: Reclaiming Capital (social surplus & demo initiatives for community devel.)

3) Stacy Mitchell: The Hometown Advantage (Institute for Local Self-Reliance www. ilsr.org)

All are must-reads if you're working on local econ-devo.

After spending a day in

After spending a day in Seattle I am definitely for the housing idea. There's nothing quite as sad as watching a man hold a sign ( politely I might add ) wearing a raggedy coat with slushy snow/rain falling on him. We need better public services ( or at least some self-made options ) for people without shelter.
