Ignorant Movie Review:  The Last King of Scotland

Response to title:  In an NPR interview Forest Whitaker said that in the process of characterizing Idi Amin his eyes became red. Aside from what I remember about Amin from the U.S. press, that's the only information I have about this movie. Otherwise, the first time I heard this title I thought, 'Braveheart finally led to a movie about Robert the Bruce, eh?'

Response to curbside poster:  1970's. That's what I'm getting.

Response post-credits: The poster held true, 70's style is upheld throughout the film. With costumes from Eurostyle tight pants & gigantic shirt collars to the African ruler-in-military-dress, and camera angles and lighting reminiscent of The French Connection, the temporal placement of the audience within Amin controlled Uganda felt realized. One aspect of such detailed scene setting I'd recommend paying close attention to is the visual archetype contrast between the easily placed 70's and the timeless stability of the tribal and oppressed. While Summerisle notes a seduction-of-power motif, the characters as metaphor for the dynamic struggle between political idealism and the "pragmatic" Realpolitik is a well developed theme worth audience attention and questions as well.

I really like this film. The acting is superb, the story line is historically fascinating and the narrative is cohesive and linear (note the extreme temporal displacement of the singular flashback). There would be few people to whom I wouldn't recommend this film.
