Lived in this town a while and never been involved in a legislative issue?

The Washington State House and Senate just finished a week of pre-session committee meetings this week. Next Monday they'll start prefiling bills. Now's a great time to start getting familiar with the issues and forums in which you want your voice heard.

Step 1: Learn to navigate the environment - committees, worksessions, bills, hearings, TVW, and on and on. The Leg home page is a good place to start. http://www.leg.wa.gov/legislature/. Do a search on a subject that's important to you and see what you find (I seached for "beer").

Stay tuned, next DIY @ the Legislature will address cyberstalking great testimony on TVW.

Strange, I don't remember any student assessments being referred to me, let alone mandatorialy. Maybe I need to check my mailbox

microenterprise

A few of us were talking a couple of weeks ago about microenterprise...I'm not sure what the action will be on this subject this session, but last year there were a couple of interesting bills coming from the senate and an excellent worksession on the topic in the Senate International Trade and Economic Development Committee. Here's a link to what the sen. dem. caucus had to say about it (some good stats): http://sdc.leg.wa.gov/issues/microenterprise.htm. You can also just do a search for "microenterprise" on the leg. page and find some good material on the impacts of microcredit/enterprise for low income populations.

A Nobel Peace Prize was just awarded for Micro-Finance

Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi economist, won this year's Nobel Peace Prize for his work in micro-fincance.  There is a Nobel Prize for Economics, but muhammad won the Peace Prize because of the incredible impact his work has on taking so many out of poverty in his native land and all over the world.  Micro-finance and micro-enterprise are powerful tools to change our world.  Think capitalism with a heart and respect,  Read the book Banker to the Poor, by Muhammad Yunus, you will be inspired and changed forever.
