I  was elated when KUOW purchased KVSN-AM (1340) for rebroadcasting in the Oly area (see the Seattle Times radio beat). And I wasn't at all bummed that the signal would be over AM waves (see ibid, headline concludes "but on AM").

I enjoy listening to AM radio when the content is as good as what KUOW generally delivers (I even like it when the content isn't so good, but that's personal). I like the sound quality, which for me is the quality of being in a little one room cabin on a stormy night or camping out in the backyard as a kid and keeping company with the radio so I wouldn't get freaked out by the quiet.

I've been perplexed and a little worried this week (and parts of last) to hear no signal (just static) from my radio each morning and evening I tune to 1340. What happened? Is this a repeat of KEXPs cruel toying with us when they used the old Bates Technical College signal and then, bam, walked away?

One simple check of KUOW's site quelled my worries:

Due to power-outages in Tumwater, KUOW 1340 AM is off the air.

OlyBloggers in Tumwater (TumBloggers?) - is the power back on yet? What's the forecast?

I feel your pain

When I lived in Centralia I would pick up kuow 1340 out of Tumwater just fine during the day time.  Once the sun went down the signal would be replaced with some right wing christian station.  No amount of tuning would bring in 1340 at night, the christian station just drowned it out.

I wish there were more stations as progressive as kuow, or even more so.  I enjoy the local Olympia music programming, and, to be sure, I enjoy Democracy Now, but I'm a total infomation junkie.  I do get bored with the stuff that is local to Seattle on kuow.  Troubles me in the same way as reading the Stranger or Seattle Weekly troubles me.  (as a side note, some years ago there was a picture of me on the cover of Seattle Weekly, but I digress).  I'm more comfortable in the reality that is Olympia.  Just wish we had more progressive informational radio.

KXOT

I miss KUOW 1340 AM too. Have you tried KXOT yet, it is affiliated with KUOW, 91.07 FM, coming in fine here in Oly.

kxot is fine when the regular programming gets boring

KXOT has saved me more than once when I can't take the local seattle stuff on kuow.  A good alternative, to be sure.  Thanks for mentioning it, seems that it often goes unmentioned and even overlooked by the kuow mothership.

KXOT

was much better when it was delivering tunes from KEXP.  NPR (KUOW, KPLU) is sliding to the right along with the rest of the copotate supported media.  KEXP has no playlists, actual shows that target specific genres of music but alas no South Sound frequency any more.

They'll be back

I got this letter from KUOW:

    From:       nrundus@kuow.org
    Subject:     RE: KUOW 1340 am
    Date:     November 15, 2006 10:02:38 AM PST

Hi Scott,

KUOW's engineers expect to have 1340 back on the air tomorrow morning.
There will be occasional interruptions in the signal as maintenance is
performed.

Thank you for your patience.
