In case you missed it.

From the Olympian:

christian hill

LACEY - Outdoors retailer Cabela's will announce this morning that it intends to build a 185,000-square-foot showroom in Hawks Prairie, City Manager Greg Cuoio said.

The announcement that Cabela's will submit a development application ends months of negotiations between the Nebraska-based company and the property owner, Hawks Prairie LLC, on a project that is projected to create more than 600 full-time-equivalent jobs, draw at least 1.8 million out-of-state tourists into Thurston County each year and funnel $5.4 million in tax revenue into state, county and city coffers annually.

Any thoughts or responses to this? I realize it isn't in Olympia but it is neighboring and is going to affect traffic etc.

Good for Lacey

Olympia will be a ghost town in the future. Take a look at what happened to Bremerton after Siverdale grew up. Or look at Aberdeen and Hoquiam. That's in Oly's future unless the City Council changes how it does business.

I know that is what many of you want, and you may get your wish. Remember, it takes those sales tax dollars to keep things afloat in Olytown. No money, say goodbye to the farmers market, parks, etc.

We will be shopping at Cabelas. And already do most of our shopping in Lacey. We would shop more in Olympia, but there is more in Lacey.

Your observation is incorrect..

Yup

They be suckin' the money and life out of Oly.

Wasn't there a post recently that Lacey kicked ass financially during the Halloween holiday, and Oly was just a yawn?

I guess we will get a taste of how bad (or good) the future will be for Oly after the Christmas buying season.

I would have liked...

the Vaseline concession on this deal with Cabela's.  Man, did those Lacey tax payers get screwed.

The tax payer always

gets screwed. Funny CS, never thought of you as an anti-tax guy. Seems you have frequently opined on subjects that would increase taxes.

my beliefs, hmmm, what do I believe.

I believe that the most good that can be done in this world has nothing to do with government.  I find that people are the greatest force in creating the good we want in our society and solving the problems of society.  If Cabela's want's to make it in Lacey without the help of the taxpayers I'm all for it.  If they can't cut it without the taxpayers then the plan is not sound.  I recognize that taxes are essential for the functioning of government and society, not sure I want billion dollar corporations getting very much of our tax dollars.  For the record, most of the tax money spent on trying to improve the human condition has been wasted and continues to be wasted.  Until our communities are  better formed and functional, the taxes will continue to be wasted.  It is very likely, when we have strong communities, that taxes will not be very necessary to create the changes we need to make our world a better place.  People can do what money can not.

I have to agree with you CS

Businesses need to cut it on their own. I'm still pissed at the amount of tax dollars that have gone into the two sports stadiums and we are looking at another one.
