Anyone have thoughts?

You know my thoughts

It would be nice to know more of the story. Who was the attacker, why did he attack this guy, etc.

A few lessons in one of the

A few lessons in one of the martial arts and the attacker would probably be in jail as opposed to the morgue. But we don't live in a nation of justice, we live in a nation of laws. The law says the shooter has the right to carry a gun and shoot who he wants as long as he feels threatened, so good for him. I hope he sleeps well.

I don't think anybody should carry guns around with them, even cops. They don't in Japan, and they have low crime rates. I know it wouldn't work here and now because we've been raised to be trigger happy cowboys. I am not saying people shouldn't have the right to own guns. I support the right for people to own guns for hunting or recreation. Carrying a handgun down a city street is a different story. Most Pro-Gun folks I'm sure will not budge on this at all, too slippery of a slope. And a right is a right.

I support the right to bear arms in whatever form you want to do it. I think carrying a loaded pistol on a packed downtown city street is stupid and asking for trouble, but that's my opinion. I wouldn't really support passing a law banning it. It wouldn't solve anything. Canada has loads of guns in the hands of it's citizens also and they don't run around killing each other. Let's talk about why Americans are the way they are. Let's talk about how we can change that. Are we too hopped on TV and caffiene and prescription drugs to change? The conversation we should be having should not be about laws and rights, but attitudes. All the laws in the world won't stop crimes from happening.

I've seen some pretty good

I've seen some pretty good martial artists get bested by some very simple moves, and once you are on the ground and being kicked, it's hard to get back up. I support him %100, and for the record, I hope he does sleep well at night. This case is the exact reason why washington state has a concealed carry law.

I find it really sad that

I find it really sad that this man resorted to taking another man's life.  And why did no one step in when the attacker started assaulting the other man?   Yes, I understand that if you are getting your ass kicked that you want to protect yourself but from what I know I just don't think that in this situation it was necessary.  I hope that he has sleepless nights.  He KILLED another human being.

But do we know how hard he

But do we know how hard he was getting his ass kicked? I know a guy who was simply, "Kicking and old drunks ass." and managed to cause brain damage, break his orbital socket and remove the mans eye, all from ONE punch. What's sad is the man will never be the same, and the ass who hit him is proud that he can hit that hard. I had a teacher in college who's brother died from a single punch to the head. He was sitting in a cafeteria in college and a guy didn't like that he was sitting with his girlfriend, one punch and he was dead. Once I get home I'll post a story about a cop who almost went to prison for killing a man who was beating him with his own flashlight. The police officer lost his job, wife, family, pension, and cannot speak, drools, cannot see out of his one eye. Physical damage is nothing to simply scoff at as an ass kicking. Ass kicking is when you are in high school and get in a fight with a guy who is really your friend so you hold back and don't cause any damage, this was an assault.

Like I said - I'm going by

Like I said - I'm going by the article and from what *I* understand - he was in a very public place with lots of people around and I didn't read anything about his injuries.  Maybe I missed it - please let me know if I have.  I also think we have different definitions of what it means to have your ass kicked.  I don't know what all your other stories have to do with this situation that you posted about and that's the only one I'm talking about.  I know that people can cause huge damage to others with just their hands - trust me, I know.  And it doesn't always come in the form of punches.  But that is totally off the subject and all I am talking about is this *one* story.  Oy.

I suppose my point is that

I suppose my point is that the news story didn't have all of the details. We don't know the size or physical strength of these men, what may have started the altercation, and I suppose until I know, I'm going to assume he's innocent until proven otherwise. My stories were simply examples of the damage that can happen when people decide to harm each other.

Definately nothing wrong

Definately nothing wrong here.

All of the blame lay with the person who is now deceased.

And why did no one step in when the attacker started assaulting the other man?

This is actually extremely common. I remember one of the first stories we had to read for an ethics class I took was about an individual who was being assaulted and nobody did anything to help. Something like 30 people walked by before anyone called 911.

I also saw on MSNBC, when they were doing one of their documentary-stings. They had a girl, about 8 or so, in a public place (on the sidewalk). Nearby were some NYPD officers in a van watching while an actor (a male in his 30s) attempted to grab her. She would shout for help and that this man wasn't her dad. The only people who stopped? A group of about 4 20-something males, who were about to beat the actor senseless (the police and MSNBC crew came out of the van to stop them). The four actually had good tactics, too. They spread out arms length from each other and approached the actor.

You can't trust society to protect you. You have to protect yourself.

Yup

"All of the blame lay with the person who is now deceased."

Precisely!!

It's likely you will get your wish OG. Even cops and soldiers who are involved in deadly force encounters have nightmares, etc. It seems kind of mean spirited of you though.

I'm glad a victim of assault and a would be victim of worse, survived.

I don't feel that what I

I don't feel that what I said was mean spirited.  I don't think anyone should take the act of killing someone lightly and it would make me a bit nervous is someone could kill someone and then go about life with a c'est la vie attitude.  I know that I would be a complete wreck - even if it were completely justified or an accident - and would endure many sleepless nights myself.

Interesting twist

King 5 reported this morning that the shooter in this case had no address and picks up his mail at a local mission. So I guess he is homeless. Being homeless he has likely seen the need for self protection, so good for him.

The attacker was well known by the criminal justice system. King 5 reported that he once set his house on fire with his family inside. Also he has been arrested in the Seattle area 3 times just this year. King 5 said he has a very long criminal record.

Perhaps untreated mental

Perhaps untreated mental illness was at play here. Perhaps some medication and some guidance is what he needed. But of course, therapy by jail cell is our socially accepted mode of rehabilitation. Why change it?

Yep, good for him. We've

Yep, good for him. We've all seen the increased media attention given to attacks on those living on the street. This man obviously said to himself that he wasn't going to be a victim.

If you're carrying a gun,

If you're carrying a gun, there are bound to be options that simply don't cross your mind. Everyone loves the Amish (this week), but no one ever wants to be them. Killing someone else, even in self-defense, is a sin of pride. There should be (and are) heavy psychological penalties for that kind of use of force. If there weren't, we'd shoot loud neighbors, ex-lovers, and politicians without a second thought.

Most people wouldn't need too much of a first thought for this group.
