I agree

U.S. Attorney Mike McKay says "....... violent acts are not a valid form of political speech."

"The strongest reason to retain the right to keep and bear arms is to protect against tyranny in government." Thomas Jefferson.

I also agree, but...

"Eco-terrorism" is a crime and ought to be prosecuted. But I also wish that the gov.t would be so tough on the REAL ecoterrorists at, say, Monsanto.

Laws will not help.

Laws and ordinances do nothing to stop homelessness and will do nothing to stop pollution. Jailing and fining people is not the answer. Let's tax polluters, or, let's use the carbon credit system like they do in many other places. It's proactive, and it's gotten great results in many places, like India.

It's funny. I felt REALLY

It's funny. I felt REALLY uncomfortable starting this post. My reasoning is that a few months ago when this came up I was pretty hot-blooded about this person and how wrong she was for setting fires. In the meantime I had read a site dedicated to her and her defense during the trial, and had much time to reflect on that.

First, I didn't want this to seem like a post where I was "rubbing it in" or anything of that sort. When I read the story I found myself a little on the sad side. This is a mother, who made a mistake, and moved on with her life, and her mistake caught up with her. Anyone who knows me I lean towards authoritarian when it comes to crime and punishment. I just wonder how much society is served by throwing her in jail for 5 years. Thankfully they decided to waive the minimum sentencing, but still: Are people going to be less likely to delve in "ecoterrorism" now that she will end up in federal prison? Has the "green-scare" actually scared any green folks?

I guess I'm just at a loss, a little sad, a little less vindictive than my normal self. What she did was wrong, she should not have done, she should have to pay for her crimes but will this change anything?

Thanks, Norm...

...for expressing so perfectly how complex some of these issues are, and how one-dimensional thinking doesn't really help. I agree with you, "sad" is the dominant feeling.

When you think of the long and gloomy history of man, you will find more hideous crimes have been committed in the name of obedience than have ever been committed in the name of rebellion. -C.P. Snow

Life is about choices and I

Life is about choices and I hope she was prepared to face the consequences of that choice. I doubt that this was a spur-of-the-moment, snap decision to fire bomb the place, but methodically planned out to make her opinion known.

Will it change anything? I think so in that it may cause the ELF and ALF to rethink their tactics and the realization that they are being highly monitored has set in. Just my .02.
