So, being a single person in Olympia is beginning to feel a little irritating. I feel like there are very few places to meet people, other than bars, and the people I have met I really haven't had any luck with. I have been on a few dates in the last 2 months but nothing that feels worthwhile and it seems like the pool is pretty shallow. Online dating has been scary to say the least. I think everyone in my age group (mid 20's) is currently married, divorced and still recovering, or don't want a serious relationship. But enough of my complaining.

Where can I go to find a worthwhile person, someone who is interesting and fun, to spend some time with, and give my attention to?

Thanks for the response, it was really insightful. I have another question: One of the big problems of releasing something on your own is lack of editorial feedback. Is there anyway short of signing up with a publisher, or having some very indulgent and somewhat masochistic friends, to get serious editorial feedback cheaply?

John M.

Dear John M,

We're not sure what you mean by "cheaply," so here are several options:

The selfpublishing site lulu.com we mentioned in the prior response provides an editorial menu. Considering the amount of work it takes to edit a manuscript, the rates are pretty damn cheap. Unfortunately, sometimes cheap is still expensive.

Another possibility is to shop around town. Posting an add on OlyBlog, or craig's list may turn up an editor. If you do get a chance to work with somebody local, we would recommend a mutual interview wherein you both could ask questions of each other and talk cost.

One other local possibility that may be cheaper than just about any other option, but is currently in the ultra-beta stage, is to workshop your stuff at a website for local writers that is currently being created. If stress testing a new service would appeal to you, feel free to e-mail us back so that we can send you a password.

This may be beyond your area of expertise but I'm wondering how to get published.

I have an idea in mind and quite a lot of material for a book that will probably be appreciated by half of the people who read it and will provoke the other half to want to burn it and possibly to want to hurt me physically.

How should I go about marketing this book to prospective publishers?

Sincerely,

John M.

Hello, oolyps.

I'm hoping you can help me.  I have a big problem with procrastination.  Somehow, I managed to get myself through graduate school, but since I graduated about a year ago, I have spent a lot of time with my proverbial digits up my proverbial derrière.  Each day, I think about doing a wide variety of things, and each day, I put them off.  I do spend a lot of time on the internet and watching TV, which I know is a waste of time.  I am productive at work, but it's the home situation that's really the problem.  In the meantime, I continue to get fat and lazy and frustrated with myself.  What should I do to break the spell of procrastination on my life?  Thanks in advance for your insight.

Sincerely,
Lethargy in Oly

Well, I followed the advice you gave me in your 3/25/07 column and whacked the little fellow across the room in a public place. A cranky OPD officer muttering something about OlyBlog and "pinkos" (I think he needs a vacation) promptly took me away and I was a guest of the Crowbar Hotel for awhile. So thanks a lot, oolyps! Smooth move, Ex-Lax!

But still, I'm a forgiving guy. Plus, I'm in another jam and need your help. Here's my problem.

I'm not sure how this happened, or how long it has gone on, but a little monkey has his hands buried deep in my nostrils. I can feel those hairs on the back of his tiny hands brushing against my olfactory nerves, with that peculiar monkey smell. He is way in there and his grip is merciless. It feels like his fingers are deep in the center of my head, enslaving my brain. Going out, of course, is an impossibility.

Most of the time I can't see his face, but occasionally he'll raise his head and look at me with a resigned and weary expression. I think he is as trapped as I am.

So what do I do?

Yours,

Snoodle B. Clapsaddle
