My family and I have been trying to find ways to reduce our impact on the Earth. One thing I covet are these little babies...ECOBAGS Shopping Systems...I hate all the plastic bags that come from the grocery store and hate even more the little plastic bags that you put your produce and bulk foods in so this site makes me happy! I hope to order some in the near future. We have also completely eliminated paper towels! The husby was skeptical but after a few weeks he was hooked on the idea as well. And I find nothing more soothing than folding the large stack of cloth towels ~ add that to the list of things that make me a nerd! =) As soon as the kids go to bed tonight, I will be sewing up a basket of cloth napkins for meal times. They are super easy to make and I'll be using scraps from my fabric bin to save some dough! Here are the directions I'll be using. I am almost out of my store bought laundry soap and I am looking forward to trying out a recipe that I found and making it myself. The cost is about .71 cents for 64 loads (so about .01 cent per load! Sweet!) Here is the recipe I'll be trying. I'll be adding some essential oil of tangerine that I have already as well. I'm also going to try white vinegar in the rinse cycle (with essential oils of course!). And some notes from the "farm" ~ All three of our chickens are laying regularly now (each with their own colored egg!) which makes me happy! I even got to see Henrietta lay her little brown egg this afternoon. Raven lays a lovely green colored egg and Scout lays a greenish brown. Loveliness. <3

It saves money and resources, and the stuff ends up getting washed anyway..

I ended up using this recipe
Submitted by OperaGirl on Sat, 04/21/2007 - 8:15am.I ended up using this recipe for laundry soap simply because I was too lazy to do the cooked version. I believe the recipe I ended up using comes out to roughly .08 to .10 cents per load while the cooked version comes out around .04 to .06 cents per load. However I LOVE the soap and LOVE using the vinegar in place of nasty fabric softener. Our clothes have been coming out clean and soft ~ no strong odor of any kind, just sort of a faint fresh smell. Grating the Fels Naptha was a pain and I will probably invest in a hand held rotary cheese grater just to make the task a little easier. One thing I have had to switch to is a warm/cold water cycle instead of cold/cold to make sure the soap dissolves. I am very pleased with how it came out and highly recommend trying it.

Submitted by OperaGirl on Sat, 04/21/2007 - 7:47pm.Fred Meyer has it all. Look in the laundry detergent aisle ~ it's up on one of the top shelves. Good luck!

Thanks! We were shopping
Submitted by Mike on Sun, 04/22/2007 - 7:12am.I think Freddies does a little better on almost all the categories that it controls. I think we will do the cooked recipe. Our daughter was excited when we told her we thought maybe we could supply her laundry soap. She has 2 active boys and is a bit of a clean freak, so I think her washer seldom sits idle and detergent is expensive.
I wonder how this home-made detergent rates in terms of phosphates down the drain? It's earth day, thinking about planet impact I guess.
As far as what's going down
Submitted by OperaGirl on Sun, 04/22/2007 - 7:57am.As far as what's going down the drain ~ I'm not sure. However I am sure it is a heck of a lot better than Tide! A friend of mine uses the cooked recipe and really likes it (She has 4 boys, 1 girl and 1 on the way so I consider her an expert in matters such as this!). I think that next time I'll do it too because the cost is so much better.
