There are new policies in place at the Olympian! A valid email address is required to post comments, and personal attacks are now banned. I hopped on the comments today for the first time in a while, and was delighted to find people doing a good job of "playing the ball".

Score one for decency!  Score two for the exchange of ideas and opinions!

Way to go Olympian!

Wow.

Two great stories on the same day. That is so cool!

Bravo!

Kudos to Rick for writing up an eloquent essay on the need for the Olympian to do exactly what they are doing now. And to all of us who have been discussing this for awhile now, along with those of us who have done the best we can on the previously virtually unmonitored comments.

Thanks Phil too for writing this, I probably would have missed it otherwise, I've been applying the 10 foot pole rule (as in I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole) when it comes to Olympian comments.

Thanks.

I'm one of four online employees at The Olympian. I'm sure some of you have seen my occasional comments regarding post deletions, etc.

I wanted to take a minute to thank everyone who helps us to keep things under control at The Olympian Online. We try to stay on top of things but we're a small team running a very large site. It's impossible for the four of us to be on top of everything, so we really appreciate any and all "heads-up" e-mails we receive.

Thanks Aaron...

...we'll keep our eyes peeled. We really appreciate the willingness of The Olympian to adjust policy based on user feedback. Let's keep the conversation going.

Thanks Aaron

Really makes a positive difference to hear from you and know what the realities are. Also helps to be encouraged to chip in how we are able and that our heads up emails are appreciated.

Good job!

Although I completely

Although I completely disagree with it on premise ( if a guy calls you a dickhead to your face, are you going to ask for his email or home phone number? ) it would be nice if the comments were more constructive. Now if we could just get the Olympian to make the whole world register their email addresses maybe we could make everyone more constructive.

Righty-ho.

Righty-ho. Uh-um...I mean righty-hoe. No...uhhh...that is...yes sirrey, Bob. In other words...affirmative.

Ho-ho?

Hoeing your own proverbial grave here? You understand I must report you to the Overlord OperaGirl.

In your face, leaving a letter at your door

The difference I guess is you can see the face of the guy calling you a dickhead, as opposed to the anonymous poster who calls you a dickhead.

Will New Policy Be Effective?

It seems to me that people can still register using an anonymous email address. Even if they get booted for inflammatory commentary, they can just reregister with a new email, if they so desire.

But I do think that this new policy will improve the situation.

Thanks OlyBlog and The Olympian.

Yeah, LOL, they used a quote

Yeah, LOL, they used a quote from an email I sent them. As far as Cal Thomas goes, I'm sticking to my guns. The man isn't just obnoxious... he's unintelligent and inflamatory. They would do well to find a more thoughtful and articulate conservative for their coverage of right-wing views.
