Hey, I know I haven't been very active on Olyblog lately. I logged on today and took a look at some of the docent discussion. What is the hyper-local content policy?

The last thing I remember, there was not a policy against posting not hyper-local content to your journal, but hyper-localness was a factor in what would be promoted to the front page. Are folks now subject to disciplinary action for posting something that's not considered hyper-local?

Also, I could use a clarification on localness. Does it have to be Thurston County? Or are neighboring counties acceptable? Western Washington? In-state?

I have to confess, I don't live in Olympia. I went to school for three years at South Puget Sound Community College. So I do have some tie to the Oly community. I'm attending the University of Washington in Seattle now. Would events going on at the UW be considered local enough to merit posting?

On March 18, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Initiative-872 is not necessarily unconstitutional, allowing the 2004 initiative to finally take effect.

Initiative-872 was designed to allow split-party voting in the primary. Although it was passed by the public, the Democratic Party, Libertarian Party, and Republican Party objected that the law was unconstitutional. Their argument is that this law effectively forces them to nominate a candidate they didn't choose for the final election. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals over-turned the initiative, but the case was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

About a month ago, when we had the Washington state primary, Rob Richards brought up the possibility of Democrats voting in Washington's Republican primary. This resulted in an interesting, though brief, discussion of the legal and ethical implications of cross-party voting. I came across a video clip today, which I found interesting in light of our earlier discussion. It seems Washington isn't the only place where a political advantage could be obtained through these sort of techniques, and Democrats aren't the only ones to consider using them.

I'd like to request that this discussion (i.e. thread) be mostly restricted to discussing tactics and election laws, and that respect be shown between members of opposing political parties.

The subject of rape (both response to false accusations of rape and actual rapes that don’t get followed up on) has surfaced in a couple of blogs lately. However, neither of those threads was the right place to engage in a deeper discussion of the topic. I was one of those interested in discussing the issues further, so I am creating a place to do so.

I believe in the right of women to choose whether they are willing to have sex or not, who they are willing to have sex with, when, how, etc. I believe in the right of women never to be coerced into a sexual relationship.

Every woman has the right to refuse to become or remain sexually intimate with any man. These rights of women are inalienable. They are not conditioned upon economic means, social standing, or race. In their strictest sense, they are not even conditioned upon the laws of the country in which she lives.

If government has a responsibility to do anything, it is to protect firstly the persons and secondly the property of all those within its jurisdiction.

One of the blogs really brought it to my attention that perhaps we have a big problem of injustice in how the government responds to rape. It was a post by Rob Richards regarding a homeless woman who was repeatedly raped. According to him, the local police refused to investigate the crime.

There are aspects of this issue about which, at this time, I cannot claim to be an expert. I’m just a young college student. I’m fortunate in that I’ve never been the victim of a serious crime. I hope that I never will be. If I am, then I hope that my case will receive the attention it deserves by the police and the legal system.

My family had a wonderful Christmas brunch today, featuring mom’s home-made cinnamon rolls. Over the last few days we’ve created a “clay” nativity scene.

On a more startling note, a bird flew into our house. No kidding! I hear that it was in the garage and then flew from there, past my dad, into the house. Then it decided to visit my bedroom. Such was the state of affairs when I got involved in the chase. Stubborn critter! I’d try to shoo it out the door and it would fly in the exact opposite direction. Finally it flew off into another room and probably out an open window. Although we weren’t quite sure what happened to it. Mom though it flew into one room. One of my siblings thought it flew into another. I can’t say I didn’t get a surprise on Christmas! LOL

Would anyone else like to share how they’re celebrating Christmas?
