As OlyBlog approaches its first blogiversary (that's like 11 in blog years), I'm wondering how people would like to celebrate the occassion. Should we get together on a Sunday at the park? Should we have an extra big Monday night at the BroHo? Should we have a nazi cross-dressing fashion show?

I'd like to also take this opportunity to say how inspiring it is to read all the conversations happening on the blog, and to see the respectful, yet engaging, manner in which folks are communicating. It is really something special.

Just to update y'all on the kind of traffic we're getting these days:

  • Daily Average Pageloads: 2,570
  • Daily Average Unique Visits: 909
  • Most Pageloads in a day: 5,121 (6/15)
  • Most Unique Visits in a day: 2,649 (6/15)
  • Number of Sites Linking to OlyBlog: 58
  • Total # of Links: 996 (over 11 months?)
  • # of Registered Users: 351

Projects in the works:

  • Redesign of the site to make it more user-friendly (more on this later).
  • Creation of a work station at Media Island where anyone can upload video or pictures to the internet where they can be accessed by OlyBlog (as well as other outlets).
  • Continued developemnt of the Olympia Civic Network so that it is more accessible and provides more ways for people to connect and communicate.
  • And many more...

Two ideas

Best Olympia blogs contest. Something with a lot of categories, so lots of people get mentions.

Something public and substantive... like a public forum on muni wifi maybe?
»

Yes, and something celebratory.

A few of us talked about this Saturday night, and there is support for the public forum, and a strong outcry for a celebration! Do you all think it would be possible to do a two-parter? The event begins with the forum and than concludes with a celebratory gathering?  It seems like it would be hard to know how many people would come any type of planned event given that we have three or possibly four different types of participants:  active bloggers, periodic bloggers, non-active users, and lurkers.

I think we'd be looking at September..that seems a little more realistic than August.

I'd like to keep this idea alive...this group of people have done so many interesting things with and for our community, and mostly with and for each other.

My Suggestion: Picnic at Capital Lake

I like to celebrate outdoors. I suggest a picnic at Capital Lake at the back of the park, over by the railroad tracks. There are bathrooms there and plenty of parking and a fountain with a trough for dogs. Sylvester Park is nice but the facilities are limited and so is the shade and seating. We could barbeque and bring boom boxes and CDs and dance. We could even go swimming (I certainly will).

Crewnshaw and I cleaned both sides of the dock before anyone got there and there was very little trash. The currents flow away from that part of the lake. I wouldln't expect hovering Caiman there either. No or brambles by the bank. But there is a dock to dive off.

The needs to be an extremely joyful celebration because it is a wonderful occasion. Olyblog has brought so many people together in peace, in nature, uniting all the causes. Media Island is the perfect place to coordinate activities, but for this activity, I recommend the FLOD. It is the womb of the city.

I will bring Lobita Pita Face two and if you are nice to her, she will share her stuffed Caiman and Nutria haha. She sleeps with them in the back seat. This should be a party of Caiman and Nutria lovers. If you want to really have fun, plan it on a night with a full moon.

Crenshaw and I really want to be there. But we are getting married and leaving town late next week. We will return July 13. I hope you can wait for us. If you do, perhaps we can also have a race for entertainment. We could stage a water marathon from the dock to under the footbridge, turnaround, and back. I am sure I can't make it the whole way anymore, but there are plenty of logs in the water to rest on. We're allowed rests on marathons. I really want to entice Loba into the water. She needs to learn to swim if she is going to be the perfect companion. Anyone want to join me? ^@^

OlyBlog turns a year old in

OlyBlog turns a year old in the middle of August, right? Is that the time period we are aiming for?

Thank you Rick

Thank you Rick for your dedication and vision and able hand with a whip as you direct your crack team of 24/7 caimans. I mean bloggers.
»

Really.

Yeah, hooray for Rick for getting this thing off the ground! And hooking us all. (Time to unhook my vein from the computer now.)Surprised
»

Yep

I do have to give Rick kudos, and everyone who participates in these discussions. I am truly impressed with the people who are here and am glad to meet and speak with people that I, more than likely, would not have approached otherwise. Thank you to all of you.
»

Yeah, yeah

At this point, I don't know if I'll be able to make it out of here. The room is just filled with all of your gooey muck. I need golf shoes! But seriously, thanks Rick for starting this grand experiment and thank everyone else for taking part. This is really the type of thing that is missing from many cities. Real communication. People with differing opinions coming together and not trying to change each others' minds, but listening and learning.
