Cit-J in Review: OlyBlog, Chi-Town Daily News and Muncie Free Press

Along with some of the discussion about citizen journalism at last week's We Media global forum in London, the BBC/Reuters/Media Center poll made it pretty clear that most people still trust the MSM over blogs. Yet over the past month or so I've come acorss some citizen journalism efforts right in the U.S. that bear mention for their efforts:

OlyBlog is a cit-j site out of Olympia, Washington. Founded by Rick McKinnon, it's entirely citizen generated--one can either post to their own blog, or email news to Rick. OlyBlog also aggregates from a number of different sources--including other blogs (which is how I found them--or they found me.) OlyBlog provides two functions that many in the cit-j dialogs feel are important--focus on hyper-local content and filtering via aggregating--and becomes a one-stop spot for trusted local and global information.

Of course!

We're doing it the way it's supposed to be done. We should give major props to Rick for starting it all, and major props to one another for keeping it going. Whether anyone realizes it or not, we are, right here in little old Olympia, revolutionizing journalism and public debate. Our local government/media doesn't provide us a forum, so we created one. No matter what your views, you have to appreciate the opportunity to be not just heard, but listened to.

Thank you all, from Rick and Sarah to TFI and White Feather for taking part in this. We're breaking ground, and, I think, changing things, just by having discussions on this site.

Bravo!

Kudos especially to Rick, for creating and maintaining this space, his vision. Thanks on back to you Rob and I must include Steve too and Emmett and so many others, we each bring our unique selves to this co-experiment.

We've weathered misunderstandings, contentious debates, and Neo-Nazi harassment. And we didn't implode during those 30 some straight days of winter rain. We have our very own mascot/arch-enemy : Caimans. Plus we have will_is_ok, so everything is indeed truly okay.

Thank you all

Being a newcomer, I don't know when this started, but I am glad that this forum exsists. At least we can voice our opinions to someone. As ii is, The Olympian, our only other public source, is biased and prints only opinions they feel fit with their objectives.
