I'd like to follow up on the notion of establishing a board of docents for OlyBlog. Below is a list of roles that would seem to be important to the function of OlyBlog.:

  1. Email submissions. One docent should be designated to receive content via email. This is not a lot of volume, so shouldn't take up much time.
  2. Local lists. One could track the activities on omjp and tesccrier, or other relveant distribution lists that turn up.
  3. Blogs. One could track Olympia-related activity on other blogs (I think Sarah has dibs on this job).
  4. City council. This is obviously Emmett's portfolio.
  5. The Olympian. One could track content in the Olympian for issues that would benefit by dicussion on OlyBlog.
  6. Video. One could track content coming on Google Video, YouTube, and the many other sites that are hosting video these days.
  7. Events. One could be responsible for seeking out and posting events.

These roles would be in addition to the general assistance provided to the many users who need help periodically getting their posts banged into shape. Of those who have been nominated to be a docent, please feel welcome to choose a role, or suggest a new one (and remember, these are just suggestions).

Blog Heaven

Anyone have an Olympia related blog other than on here, feel free to msg me with info. I'm working on a relevant Bloglines feed that is public and that will also help me wallow in Oly blog heaven.

ahem... begging for a larger portfolio

About a year back I tried to do something and really failed at it, and wasted about $100 of a local political groups hard earned money in the end. It was an attempt at a "local issues forum," sort of like Olyblog, but more structured in how it works. One of two main discussions going on, with the main result being an "in person" forum based on the online discussions. There was also the possibility set up for a collaborative document report being written after the discussion.

Anyway, it never worked out, mostly because I committed the first sin of e-democracy: get people to say that they'll participate before you launch. But, I'm hoping we can accomplish something similar here. There are ongoing discussions here (downtown for example) that absolutely beg for being brought off the blogs and into a larger discussion. Also, eventually bringing these discussions into the the in-person would also end up helping olyblog.

So, that's my docent manifesto.

put this on a wiki

Doesn't this kind of stuff [docent chat] work "better" on a wiki page?

    > boring blog material, I assume, for most <

but I like "systems/groups"(...or whatever you'd call this) design dialog

> [ but on a wiki  :-p ] <

I'm confused

I haven't had enough coffee yet and I am confused. Are you commenting on Rick's original post? Or are you talking about what I am organizing with bloglines?

If you are talking about what I'm doing with bloglines, I can explain further: I'll periodically read through Olympia themed blog posts elsewhere and comment and link some of them here on OlyBlog. I already do some of this anyway, simply getting more focused and organized.

If you mean a wiki for docent only discussion, that could eventually work well, though my first instinct is to create a simple newsgroup for such discussion.

Okay, time for more coffee. :)

I'd like to remain a

I'd like to remain a moderator, and do what I can, but I have a lot going on right now and don't feel like I could dedicate enough quality time to any one area. If I could serve in an advisory role, that would be great for now. I'm really focused on BRAC and the PPU (referendum); after the referendum business is over II think I could take on a bit more.
