KNDO/KNDU Free parking may end in downtown Olympia

A Parking Advisory Committee plays to recommend to the City Council next week (January 2nd) that Olympia end 18 years of free parking in the downtown core and adopt a metered system.Parking Manager Kip Dernovich says meters could be in place by October if the council adopts the idea. The council decided to study paid parking because of concerns that workers have been tying up downtown parking spaces by moving their cars among the free stalls, preventing customers from getting to businesses. The Olympia newspaper says a city study showed that about one-third of the free spaces were tied up by people moving from place to place.

Speechless

I can't believe no one has anything to say about this.  Think of the average Joe or Jane, who buys the Olympian's meme that downtown is "dangerous."  Why would they want to first spend time looking for a parking spot and then spend money for it too?

From a city perspective...

They could sell the parking fee as necessary in order to pay for improvements to downtown.

You shell out a few cents/dollars to park downtown and we'll clean it up.

More than likely it's timing

More than likely it's timing has everything to do with the downtown ordinance. What better way to show the Olympia area that downtown is failing financially, then to charge for parking?

I browse a downtown music

I browse a downtown music store at least once a week, maybe twice a week looking for vintage gear.  I can't tell you how many times I've been in there and the employees have to leave momentarily to shift their parking position (90 minutes expired).  It's pretty easy for parking enforcement to find repeat offenders and just as easy for them to associate the vehicle owner with a local business.  I hate to say it, but we need some type of parking structure.  I don't think it should be haze gray and full of 90 degree angles, either.  Maybe we could compromise by hiring a local architect to design it and then ask the local artist community to come up with ways to create a more appealing facade.

There was a parking

There was a parking structure at my University that was far from the dull gray structure. It even housed a Chili's Too and Starbucks and was dubbed the "Garage Mahal."

Of course, it also cost $15 million to construct.

how about no cars downtown at all?

Hiya All--

Boo Hoo! Don't like it, then move or lobby--

Grow up! Cars are a luxury--
Ride an "eff'n" bicycle for Christ's sake!
...and I mean that literally:
What would Christ do? --Use technology that is so wasteful?
Don't get me wrong, I love driving, the feeling of scooting, etc...but I hate the system, the cars, the choices, what is legal, the whole racket, all of it-- just here to suck our money and make more money for the manufacturers, cops, WSDOT, Feds, insurance, gas/oil, etc...

I's rather take the time to ride on hightech 21st centrury roadway for horses in my OilSkin duster than sit on one more I-5 nightmare--

Even though I like the feeling and ease of driving, say taking off on a rocking roadtrip in the sunny Summer weather, they are nonetheless:

Pollutive, takes up massive amounts of space, causes many deaths, include animals & pets that are hit by "mistake/accident"...what else? for now, cars are lnked in a process that to some extent controls our national political system, including in my opinion, influencing the process of national security & defense--

I just believe that transportation technology should change, and I see that the use of the space in our city is heavily biased to car owners/users--

I just wonder at all the alternatives that could have been or still can be, yet die a stilborn death because of stupid cars-- what a wasteful fad--

...ever look at an empty street in downtown at nite, and just "see" a covered plaza, a place for people, and a rich artistic street life that could be ? ever want to BBQ with your neighbors & dance in the streets? OK >whatever< I'm a trippy 'greener...

I'd be so OK with a parking complex at the periphery of town, adj to fuel & the highways--

Maybe even with security to deter vandalism and crime--

Close the streets down to the majority of thru traffic, and see if more people come to oly--

Try putting up covered awnings for walking around and encourage day & night plazas:
-with vendors
-and entertainers, street musicians, whatever--

This trend towards  "Facist"-like public  policy has got to stop in Oly!

Once this process starts, it will snowball till the city will be regulating all sorts of stuff, instead of running our basic municipal services, and lowering costs for citizens and community partners-

No cars downtown

I'd love to experience more car-free zones. I'd want them designed for universal access, for folks of all abilities, so scooters etc. would be allowed.
