Ferocious raccoons take on area dog - The Olympian

OLYMPIA - Erik Lee wants to warn his neighbors to keep their pets inside after his mid-size dog was attacked by two raccoons.

Lee lives about seven blocks from where 10 cats were killed by raccoons in the Garfield Nature Trail neighborhood earlier this summer. He hadn't even heard what had been going on there.

Lee lives on Cardigan Street Northwest. He said there is about a 20-foot tree barrier between his home and soccer fields at Jefferson Middle School.

"There are plenty of wooded areas and creek beds where they can hide," Lee said Tuesday of the raccoons.

He said he let his Australian shepherd-husky mix out early Labor Day morning when she was attacked. He ran out and grabbed a garden hose and started whipping the bigger raccoon that was attacking his dog. The other raccoon charged at him, but ran off with the bigger one after it was hit twice with the hose.

His dog, Lucy, wasn't injured, but she smelled like rotted fish or garbage after the attack.

"I told several neighbors to keep their cats and dogs in, if possible, because these raccoons are really aggressive," Lee said. "The big one just stood his ground until whipped, and the other charged right at me without hesitation. Totally wild."

we need to slash and burn

we need to slash and burn any and all raccoon habitat if we really want to drive out the bastards. The more woods we have the more raccoons we have. BURN IT ALL DOWN! do it for the sweet little kitty cats who kill songbirds and the poor doggys who kill squirrels. We humans have conquered nature. So why havent we conquered raccoons?

Shouldn't PETA be involved

Shouldn't PETA be involved by now?

I mean, if we're trying to stop people-on-animal crime, I would hope that the organization would be attempting to stop animal-on-animal crime.

"People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people."

I doubt it.

While I strongly support many of the policies that PETA pushes, I have no illusions that it isn't a special interest group. I got a good chance to see how special interest groups work when I volunteered for WashPIRG. They have a set number of issues and they work hard to stay on message. To take on the issue of wild, rascally racoons would definately stray off message for PETA.

I don't think

I think that we should just capture the raccoons and put them somewhere else, NOT BURN DOWN ALL WOODED AREAS. That's where they retreat and stay while they are not attacking people..........................=[[[[ stupid thing to say people

I think one of

these would solve the problem.

Those Masked Characters

thrive in my yard and have injured two of my cats and killed a pet rabbit. Some of the raccoons are the size of beach balls. They live in my walnut, elm, and pine trees. That is the price I pay for having a wild overgrown lot. Some lessons I have learned:

Get your pets inside before dark if possible.

Don't leave pet food outside. They also like standing water.

Raccoons hate bloodmeal. It is expensive and the effect doesn't last long, but they shy away from the stuff if you spread it around in a concentrated area.

Get one of those obnoxious motion activated singing Christmas trees and set it up in an area where you want the raccoons to avoid. They hate those things more than we do.

I'm not into guns or dogs (and yet I live in Grays Harbor County. Go figure.) but those are two other anti-raccoon tools. I don't want to kill or run them them off, I just want to manage the domestic vs. wild situation.

I'm not sure if this is folklore or fact, but I have been told that capturing and moving a raccoon to a different territory is as good as killing it. Any of you zoological OlyBloggers know anything about this?

But hey, I grew up on farm not too far from McCleary where cougars used to kill and eat one of our ponies every winter, so this raccoon thing is not that big of a deal.

As for will is ok's statement, the guy is zen master. And as such, I would suggest investigating his blog and comments before accepting the surface words. will is far from "stupid." Ironic, sardonic, bubonic, yes. But not stupid. Dig into his contribs, and you might even get a good laugh. And that is good.

I've got one

A rather large female that had a couple of cubs last year.  She has a facination with the culvert under my driveway.  Why?  I don't know - it's closed off on one end.  She took the cubs in there last year.  She has wandered into my yard many times.  I just try to give her space.

Then there are the deer.  My wife planted roses.  The deer love her.
