ESPN should be ashamed of itself.

Friday Night Hanging on ESPN

EDIT: Thank you Norm for showing us evidence that this was not an ESPN production. It was a very good imitation of ESPN's style, though it was in terrible taste. My assertion still stands that America is more entertained than the Roman Empire was, just in different ways. It is no longer OK to stage public battles between man and beast, but it's ok to do it with CGI on the TV or silver screen.

Getting Close There

I tend to think the arenas with lions were worse than hanging, but I can't believe ESPN publicized a man's execution using such sick humor. Granted, the man constituted the worst kind of war criminal but glorying in a hanging? Its too much like a lynch mob mentality. I don't like the kind of propaganda that inflames people into violence. This film was in extremely bad taste. It is also guaranteed to infuriate the people that still support him and make matters worse. We feed the fury of terrorism this way.

I don't think the film has

I don't think the film has any value, in any conceivable way, but do you really think ESPN put this together?  You've got to be having a slow day if you think ESPN is the responsible party.  I thought you all were journalists!

maybe you're right...

...but I've seen some pretty far out stuff on ESPN. It really wouldn't surprise me if they did put this out. Regardless, it's pretty terrible that somebody's time, efort and money went into the production of this.

AIRING the Film versus MAKING It

I 'm more concerned with ESPN's choice to air this film than who made it.

<...long sigh...> ESPN DID

<...long sigh...> ESPN DID NOT MAKE THIS FILM.  ESPN DID NOT AIR THIS FILM.  IT'S A WEB VIDEO!!!  THAT'S ALL FOLKS...

I should add

I think bringing it here was a good thing. A level of awareness of what some folks in this country do with their spare time is disheartening. Ignorance of it won't solve anything though.

And yes, it looked pretty dang real. I just couldn't imagine ESPN of all places covering this.

»

yeah,

I was a little skeptical, but all of the graphics looked right on and ESPN does have some programming that is more comedy than sports, I'm glad we were able to learn that it wasn't real. However, you're right that it's pretty sad what people consider "entertainment".

Depends

The question of whether America is worse than the Roman Empire is very subjective. Does America have a greater ecological impact? Yes. Are the most powerful Americans more powerful than the most powerful Romans were? Yes. Will the American Empire last 900 years, like the Roman did? Probably not.

But it depends on who you ask. What is better? If faster and more is better, then yes, America is better. I think there are aspects of each culture that are reproachable and aspects that are appealing. Unfortunately those appealing aspects of America are rapidly being overshadowed by the quickening growth (possibly cancerous and totally out of control) of the American corporate military industrial complex, et al.

fast food nation

I just watched linklatters fast food nation. man that's one hell of a movie. When they showed the guy's leg get stripped to the bone in a meat grinder I was paralyzed and even now feel nauseous thinking about it. My consumption of beef and other meat products will be greatly reduced as a result of watching this movie. I recommend it highly.
