Rather than trap the

Rather than trap the animals, we should examine any social factors which may have led to this recent violence (because they wouldn't kill for no reason), train them and then release them back into their animal society.

I'm not sure a wild animal,

I'm not sure a wild animal, such as a raccoon, can be trained so to speak. I'm willing to bet good money that the reason for this behavior is due to a lost food source, in which case, trapping and relocating them may be the answer. I can't think of any other reason, unless rabies is involved, in which case I would think they would have to be trapped and put down for the sake of public safety.

Maybe with all this media attention...

...that dreary Garfield Nature trail might actually become a tourist destination?  I'm inclined to put on my hiking boots and go on over to tramp around looking for raccoons who think they're in a Stephen King novel.  Where's that camera?

There was actually a strange

There was actually a strange critter on the trail last year. I couldn't figure out what it was and neither could the people I was with. We tried to narrow it down to some possibilities, but it was strange looking. It really did appear to be some sort of cross between a cat and a sloth. None of us wanted to get too close (you could only make the face out. The rest of the body was hidden under some tree and a lot of shade.)

It's kind of a creepy place

I'm not all that surprised it's a breeding ground for killer raccoons and mutant feline sloths.  I took a walk there last year with a friend, and the ambiance of the place gave him the willies to such a degree he insisted we turn back and go walk somewhere else.

They'll Write About Raccoons

We live in a place, in a nation where the national media will cover a brazen raccoon uprising, but will neglect mentioning the NFZ anniversary.

The nuclear free zone is more worthy of national media attention than a bunch of killer 'coons.

Not to say the killer coons aren't interesting. I just think it's a slap in the face to do it on the same day as the NFZ anniversary city council celebration.

My guess would be public

My guess would be public interest. The racoons are interesting, I have heard of raccoons attacking other animals to defend what they are doing, I've never heard of a raccoon killing something that large though. The NFZ just isn't that interesting, city council can pat themselves on the back, they spent some money and fixed a problem that didn't exist within the city, yay them. I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Nuclear Weapons are a Problem Everywhere

Norm, I suppose you didn't attend the city council meeting, or listen in live on the internet to hear the eloquent words which were spoken in support of Olympia's Nuclear Free Zone Ordinance. Do you really believe that the problem of nuclear weapons doesn't exist with in the city?

Former Mayor Bob Jacobs spoke to remind us that, had it not been for a cautious officer in the Russian military and his decision not to go ballistic because of what he felt was a false alarm, we would not be here today.

Beside the fact that living under the threat of nuclear holocaust is a form of terrorism. Look who has all the Nukes? The federal government of the USA. Look who is guilty of non-compliance with dis-armament treaties - The federal gov't of the USA. Look who has said that enough is enough - the City of Olympia. The federal government has failed us.

What about all the business entities, which are complicit in the nuclear weapons industry? It is time to hold them accountable as well.

I am glad to live in a city that takes such an important issue seriously. The world will be a better place without the threat of nuclear war.

That is what I call public interest.

You are fooling yourself if

You are fooling yourself if you think little old olympia is making a difference through this. We are a drop in the bucket and we do not matter. IF this were actually something the public were interested in, don't you think newsmedia would have jumped all over it? C'mon people it's not that hard to grasp, you had your city council meeting, and how many people showed up? How many people showed up to any of these NFZ event? You may have a few people who care but the rest of us do not give a damn. Threat of nuclear war? Would you like me to tell you the last time that I had a fear of nuclear war happening? Never. I've never had a single fear of nuclear war happening, it doesn't cross my mind because it's not a blip on the radar and the whole damn world would probably go up in smoke with all of the countries that probably have them pointing at us at this moment. So, if I have no rational fear of nuclear war, why in the holy hell would I care that Olympia has "banned nuclear weapons" within it's city limits? I'm not that paranoid, I have better things to worry about, like " How much money do I have in my checking account again?" or " Jeez, should I really leave my job for another career? Should I go back to school instead? Maybe I should get a new career and go to school while working in something I enjoy?" ooh, or " My grandparents are getting older and expect me to take over responsibilities on the farm they own ( I inherit half of it ) and I'm not married ( let's face it, farmers need wives, and I think most men do, women are the sanity in men's insane lives) I have no future in the career I'm at, and I don't want to live in the middle of nowhere and commute to a city in order to financially keep a farm that I work on after coming home from my job in the city. " Nuclear warfare is not within my scope of caring.

Now killer raccoons, as often as I have been running lately, that scares the crap outta me.

There is one thing that you are completely wrong about.

Men aren't crazy. Women have the crazy gene. Men have the stupid gene. Somehow, a balance is struck between the two. Think about it.

The NFZ is basically the

The NFZ is basically the Olympia City Council saying "We don't like nuclear weapons."

If the NFZ had some teeth to it and Comrade Johnson actually sent the local police department to intercept a federal shipment coming by rail, it would be covered by every media outlet in the world.

I'd definately be interested in seeing that happen, just because it would be the greatest form of entertainment to ever hit this city.
