Mah weighs mayor race

Matt Batcheldor
The Olympian

OLYMPIA - City Councilman Joe Hyer said Thursday that he won't run to replace Mayor Mark Foutch, but he knows someone who will - Councilman Doug Mah.

"Everybody knows it," he said. "He just hasn't announced it yet."

Mah was noncommittal Thursday, saying that he would make his decision this month. "My family and I are still discussing our options," he said.

-------------------------------------

In my personal opinion, Mr. Mah has no grasp on what Olympia needs and doesn't deserve to even be on the city council, forget about mayor. He will run, however, I've known this for a couple of months now. If anybody out there is interested in keeping big business money and special interests out of our local government, please write a letter to the Olympian explaining why you feel this way. There are many issues in which Mr. Mah does not represent us, from land-use to the terribly oppressive and disempowering anti-homeless ordinances that he would surely try to push through as mayor, and has already tried as a councilperson. This is a critical election for Olympia and will decide which way our town goes in the next few years. Tired of the Rovian political games on the national level? Doug Mah offers that, and nothing else. Tired of our reactionary and divisive city council? Doug Mah will only give you more of the same. Tired of a city council that thinks curing social diseases with "band-aids" is a good idea? Well, you get the point.

Divisive city council?  Go

Divisive city council?  Go ahead and lump TJ in on that one (I mean really, really think hard about how much TJ does for *ALL* of Olympia).  Mah will have my vote and quite a few others I'm sure.  I'm curious to see who will be his opposition.  If it's the name that was floated out here on Olyblog a few weeks ago, Mah shouldn't have a difficult race.

??

I must have missed it. What name?

The fact that TJ stands by his principles, or at least appears to from my perspective, outweighs things like time-wasting NFZ ordinances. I'm not going to rally for TJ here (see enpen's signature quote), but I would vote for TJ over Mr. Mah any day. Really, I was speaking at the council as a whole, not any one member.

I'm curious as to why you would/will vote for Mr. Mah. What part of his platform appeals to you? What positions has he taken that makes you think he'll honor the mayor's chair with fairness to all classes of people?

I knew you were going to ask

I knew you were going to ask me!  Help?  Anybody remember the name?  I want to say her first name was Susan, but I can't be certain.  Hopefully somebody will help me out!

Mah visited my home when he was running against Booth (who lost by a TON!).  That means a lot to me.  These are not partisan positions - so party line votes are out the door.  For me it comes down to who I think will do a better job and make Olympia a better place to live (see things the way I do).  Doug Mah is my kind of leader in this regard, although I don't agree with him on every issue.  There are other things about him that appeal to me as well.  I watch every city council meeting and he gets it.  He is level-headed and thoughful.  Let's see who ends up running for Seat #1.

Mah's Behavior during NFZ discussion

I saw Mah's behavior during the NFZ debate as juvenile and at times rude, for example rolling his eyes. His questions during the episode while I was there were rhetorical attacks on the ordinance. He didn't provide any substantive opposition that I can remember.

NFZ

The NFZ ordinance was a great step in benefitting all Olympians, and not only humans! The threat of nuclear war is, sadly still with us. But actions like the City of Olympia's Nuclear Free Zone Ordinance are a step in the right direction.

Divisive

If people view the NFZ ordinance as divisive, maybe that is because of the degenerative influences of right-wing media brainwashing. The NFZ should bring people together!

I'd like to clarify my point

The NFZ ordinance was a great gesture. I wholly agree that nuclear weapons are terrible and would love to see America rid of them. Is that an issue our city council should be addressing? Not while people here live in poverty, and not while people here are dying of exposure for lack of adequate housing. We need to have priorities. The nuclear weapon issue, frankly, cannot be solved on the local level. Poverty and houselessness can be.

Localness

Passing a NFZ law in one locality will not cure the world of the disease of Nuclear Weapons. But we do not live in a bubble. And when enough localities pass similar rules, the cumulative effect will make a real difference.

Yes, there are other issues, but to call one more important than another is pointless, except for inflating ones egoist perspective about his or her own issue. All matters of justice are important. Some maybe more critical than others. But it's all subjective. The real important thing is that we all respect each others' issues, their validity and relevance and importance.

I wish TJ would or could come on here for more rebuttal, because he is so knowledgable about this issue.

I think this article says it

I think this article says it all:  The Olympia [Not So] Nuclear Free Zone.  Cut through the fluff...

NFZ Work in Progress

The NFZ was purposely designed to be lenient at first and gradually develop its strength as a tool of enforcement. Our system is so entrenched with firms that are involved in the nuclear weapons industry that it will take years to root all of them out and locate reasonable alternatives.

the value of an issue

"Yes, there are other issues, but to call one more important than another is pointless, except for inflating ones egoist perspective about his or her own issue."

While I don't know that I agree with all of his conclusions as I don't have all of the numbers that underlie his assumptions, I do think Bjorn Lomborg makes an interesting case for methodical cost-benefit analysis of addressing issues.

Exactly!  Couldn't agree

Exactly!  Couldn't agree more.  Nuclear technology is more than weapons.  It's energy and when properly used and supervised a great source of power to run lights, ships, phones, etc.

Nuclear Fission Burden

The energy of Nuclear Fission is a burden on the economy and ecology that is not sustainable. Sure, the lack of CO2 and other global warming gasses is great, but the nuclear waste is toxic and storage remains a complicated and unsolved problem.

local solutions

I don't think that poverty and homelessness can be solved on a purely local level any more than nuclear weapons proliferation... It is important to tackle both problems locally, but until other localities join in the fight, finding a real lasting solution will be next to impossible.

That is unless we build a wall and gate and close ourself off from the rest of the world. In the case of nuclear weapons, that might not help much if somebody fancies to target us with a bomb.

Every Gun is a Theft

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.

Whats the point?

The mayor of Olympia, beyond the title and ceremonial "duties" isn't any different than any other council member. Mah also just ran for reelection two years ago, why run again if all he's going to get is a title?

Olympia is a council/manager style government where the city manager runs the city day-to-day and everyone on the council has the same authority as a legislator. I'm a little lost on this one.

By the way, anyone hear yet who else might be running?

Future political

Future political aspirations.  The mayor is the chairman and it's a step in the direction of state rep or senator or more.
»

nodding of the head

"Future political aspirations."

Ab-so-lutely. And what a shame it would be to elect as Mayor someone for whom Olympia's people are the equivalent of a tidy resume line.

"Anybody who doesn't know that politics is crime has got a few screws loose."

»

I'm not sure.

You're right. I imagine though, that the mayor gets to set the tone of meetings, and is also sort of the ambassador to other cities/groups (mayors' associations etc.). Plus, it probably looks pretty good on a resume.

don't vote it only encourages power seekers

well it's true all politicians are power grubbing egocentric loons. i mean something must be whacked if a person spends hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars to  get elected to a job that only pays them 120 grand about for congress or senate. well what i'm saying is that they don't do it for the money. it's for the power!!
I as a poor person cannot endorse any one political candidate but  from dougies  past actions and  all the crap he tried to bulldoze through. i can say  he is someone i wouldn't vote  for personally and i would encourage others to vote for  anyone  else.
and i say to that ehver guy if you don't like poor  people sleeping in doorways well the poor people don't like sleeping in doorways either, can we move in with you? the thing is we don't have many choices as to where we can safely sleep without risks to our personal safety or to trespassing laws.
in some ways doorways to businesses  can be the safer alternative for some. and yes it is not the place for people to sleep. but until you can give us a better/safer alternative people will still be forced  to sleep in the public view. and don't get on the tired  hack about getting a job or what not. one needs a place to live before one can even start to putting one's life together and move up the social ladder so to speak. i just finished reading  "without housing: decades of federal housing cutbacks massive ho....ssness and policy failures" and it  sums up the whole issue in one short read. maybe rob could post it here for everyones edification ? the reason i continue being h.....ss is because i cannot afford to rent a dwelling. i'm on a list for section 8 housing but they tell me it's a 5 to 7 year wait. i guess i will have to sleep in doorways until  then unless i die of exposure or some other  related illness/crime statistic.
