One important idea (among many) that I left Amy Goodman's appearance at the North Thurston Performing Arts Center (a fundraiser for TCTV and KAOS as part of her new book tour) with was how we in America see a much different picture of the events in Iraq than those around the world. More specifically we see different pictures (photographs) of the war in Iraq. We see pictures of husky, healthy troops - Not caskets. We see pictures of living Iraqis, not the vast swaths of the dead.
» This is a problem, and we have an opportunity to rectify the situation here, on the internet. I say, show us the pictures. Show us the death, the rotten death, that our tax dollars enable. The problem is that it is even difficult to find these pictures on the internet. Google has actively cooperated with the Chinese government to censor its citizens access to the internet. How far have they (quietly) gone to censor and restrict the access of Americans to the Internet? I am having trouble finding what I would consider to be unrestricted pictures of the estimated 655,000 Iraqis who have died as a result of the US invasion. AHA - and GO FIGURE use a different search engine (altavista), and PRESTO! of course this doesn't guarantee conspiracy to restrict access on the part of google, but it does make you think.

If People Saw the True Horror of War
Submitted by Robert Whitlock on Tue, 10/31/2006 - 6:22pm.The perpetrators of the war would (and will-hopefully) be held accountable. And that is precisely what needs to happen.
So then all war veterans

Submitted by Robert Whitlock on Tue, 10/31/2006 - 8:51pm.When regular, every day, Americans see these images, that will have an impact. Did you look through the Salon Archive that is linked above?

Submitted by Norm on Wed, 11/01/2006 - 12:17am.Yes I did. Disturbing ( I think you'd have to be mentally lost not to think so ) depressing, unnecessary. Yet I know it's a truth and that war will not only not be abolished, but at times I feel it's necessary. I'm pretty young, I've seen a handful of things that weren't pretty, nothing compared to what others have seen at my age. I have a grandfather who was in the korean conflict ( war if you will ) and to this day will not speak about it. Yes, americans are being shielded, do you not think that some of these pictures would scar young children? Maybe we should show them a video of a woman having an abortion too, just so they can see what reality is like. Maybe a drug addict overdosing, a smoker slowly suffocating to death. OH even better why don't we let everyone see what a rape is like just so they aren't shielded from what the world might bring them, what people in their own country, city, neighborhood might bring them.
Yes, I saw the pictures, I don't like what we are doing there, but even though our media shields us from graphic pictures, I don't think that changes how we as a country feel about this conflict. Look at how many people think this is going badly. The only impact everyone in this country seeing these pictures will have is a lot of nightmares and probably a few more cases of PTSD, but it won't stop a conflict, war will still happen, spouses will still cheat on each other and people in seattle will still shoot each other over drugs.
I understand your point Rob, but let's be real here.
That, Ladies and Gentleman, is my pessimistic post of the day. Thank You *bow* Thank you.
