[edit Sunday, October 15, 2006: Today, The Olympian proved me wrong. Sometimes it's good to be wrong! Here's a link to the letter in today's paper.]

Here's a copy of a letter to the editor I submitted to The Olympian almost two weeks ago. They only rarely let letters they receive go unpublished - so says their editorial policy. But this one has gone unpublished for almost two weeks. No letter that I have sent to the editor has taken this long to be published. However, if they do eventually publish it, I'll be sure to update this blog entry.

When a thief enters a bank and hands the teller a note demanding cash at gunpoint, there is no question as to the illegality of that act. It is bank robbery, and it is a criminal act.

When a nation’s military might is used to perpetrate a war of aggression, a similar logic holds true. The war of aggression is an illegal act, and its masterminds and executors are criminals.

The war in Iraq was based on fraudulent premises. A variety of sources and examples support and confirm this conclusion. For example, a Downing Street memo stated, “the facts were being fixed around the policy.

Have you called them?

Have you called them?

They usually call the writer back in a couple of days..

They called

They called to confirm. I sent the letter on Thursday, September 28th. They called to confirm on Tuesday, October 3rd. I told Mary that I wrote the letter and confirmed my status as a resident of Olympia.

I have always had letters published after they have called to confirm authenticity. They always also say, "your letter will be considered for publication." Up until now, I have assumed that meant, "your letter will appear in the opinion section shortly."

Maybe I just missed the publication. Maybe it's forthcoming. Maybe they have not and will not publish it.

I have been denied a couple of other letteres I have written in regard to Lt. Ehren Watada's situation - those have gone without follow-up calls.

It seems there are some new things going on at the Olympian's opinion page. Whoop!

Sometimes they hold off for

Sometimes they hold off for a few weeks to lump topic-related letters together. Or maybe they're just jerks. The first answer helps me sleep at night.

I heard a rumor that the O is really backlogged on letters...

... to the editor right now.

Backlog and Lumping

I am sure that the problem is backlog and lumping together related letters. I'll try and exercise some patience. However, I don't like the idea of lumping at all. I say, publish the best of the letters that they get on a topic, given the space available, as the letters are received. But, then I am not paid to make executive decisions at the Olympian. Though I am available for an interview.

But it's frustrating to watch what is going on in this country, and to watch how this country relates to the world - and to see such inadequate dissent expressed in the mainstream media. Watching the Bush administration maneuver in Iraq is like watching a bank robber walk down the street from the heist and sit down at the café on the corner and have tea. The whole spectacle can be quite infuriating.

back logged

They certainly are. Better luck after the election.

Backlog

I don't doubt that they're backlogged. I can't help but suspect, however, that the substance of the letter has contributed to its unpublishing.

Maybe I'll see it tomorrow morning.

Since we're discussing

Since we're discussing Letters to the Editor, I have a little pen sitting in my room courtesy of The Olympian for being the writer of the month before.

But yeah, that's weird it's taken a while to publish. I've had a handful of letters published and one or two that didn't make the cut. I haven't written one in a while, though.

I missed the notice

Or maybe my calender just doesn't have "national pat yourself on the back day" listed.  You guys are amusing, and you have more in common than you give yourselves credit for.

OlyBlogging at Work???

I'm going to need to speak to your manager.

Yep...

Just checked. Mine does.

funny...

...mine says it's every day. But then, I do know how to buy a calendar.

I contest that statement

Clearly if that were the case you'd get one of those snazzy new ones with the Day of Rest built in.  Y'know, the ones with the 8th day?

"If you are a dreamer, come in. If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, a hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer. If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire, for we have some flax-golden tales to spin. Come in! Come in!"

In my family...

...we call it "nij" and it happens between Sunday and Monday.

ROTFLMAO!

Differences in Text

There are some differences between the letter published in the paper and the letter I sent the paper (this is according to my "sent" email receipt.) Nothing in terms of content, but there are some aesthetic changes that, personally, I wouldn't have made. Strangely, some the changes are reminiscent of a rough draft of the letter I had written prior to sending the version that I did. - Unfortunately I have deleted that copy of the letter from my files. The version of the letter posted above, is the version that was sent to The Olympian, according to my "sent" email folder. Go figure.
