With energy crisis and resource wars currently in process and looming ever larger on the horizon, alternative means of transportation can provide a real solution to the crux we face as a society in regard to our heavy appetite for fossil fuels. Earlier today I was trying to think of a way to legislate against gas guzzling vehicles. Let's hope it doesn't have to come to that. Here's a solution other than legislation:

It's nearly May, time for Thurston County's 20th Annual Bicycle Commuter Contest!

Ride your bike in May to work or school or on errands and win some great prizes and gifts. Prizes include certificates to local bike shops, sports equipment, massages, goodies from area restaurants, and more. And if you ride often, you'll get in great shape, help improve air quality, save a LOT of money and win prizes and gifts!

All registered riders can get a free bicycle safety check, too. Just take your bike to the Wrenchers Ball at the Olympia Transit Center on April 27 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Registration forms will be available there as well.

Registration forms are available for download online.

Morally Objectional Transportation

At what point does transportation that relies on the procurement of resources in other parts of the world (Oil in Iraq, for example) become morally objectionable?

I have participated in this for about 5 years

It's a lot of fun, and gets people back on their bikes after the long cold wet winter.

I'm looking at one of these instead of the eGO I posted about a few days ago.  Anyone have any experiance with them?  CHAD 360, you are our bike Guru, what say you about this system?

SO!  How many of you "green" folks gonna put your pedals where your mouth is and enter the contest?  Lots of "green" talk here, but the number of you that I know are doing something in your life to make changes doesn't seem to equal the constant rhetoric.  If a crusty old cop who thinks the human caused global warming is mostly B.S., can continue to lower his carbon footprint, you greeners can step up for a least a month!!!  p.s. electric bikes or electric assisted bikes not allowed!!

Rob W. with all the oil we have in the Gulf, ANWR, and Colorado, we would never have to touch a drop of foreign oil again all the way out to my great great great grandchildren reaching a very old age.  But many of the same people that complain about the evils this country does in the name of procuring oil from other nations, also refuse to allow drilling for oil here.  And they do this regardless of how minimal the impact on the environment.  For the next couple decades you can't have your cake and eat it too.

i log in 8 miles a day..

i gotta get down there and sign up.. OC, we dont have enough domestic oil for our grandkids.. that just aint true.. we use way too much of the stuff: 22 million barrels in a single day's worth, for that to be the case.. Also, "green" is the way things are headed.. There aint no use fighting it. Its now bi-partisan, and corporate supported. Every Republican I know considers themself environmentaly concious.. As well they should, the technology is now ripe for it (ie, not a drain on profits. As a business approach, it actually enhances profitability these days.)

I would agree

Going green will happen, but likely much slower than many might hope it will happen.  It has to happen, but our whole nation is built on oil.  So many things we use on a daily basis come from oil besides the bulk of our transportation.  So it won't happen overnight, but it will happen.

I'm more than fairly confident, I will still have a petroleum burning vehicle in my driveway even if I live to be a ripe old age of 95+.

There is LOTS of money to be made going green, and in this nation that will help it happen.  But it will happen with baby steps, not leaps and bounds.  I believe we will see better pollution control systems on our petroleum vehicles, to include CO2 controls, before we see a huge shift to other fuels.

We need 100+mpg hybrids as a standard..

Congress should make that a goal and they should fund the R&D for new battery technology, etc.. Even without the green aspect, I really do think cheap oil is a thing of the past for a variety of reasons (Growth in China being one of them..)

huberts peak

lots of N. & S. American deposits (shales, etc all) Huberts Peak , a good book (starter)

I bike, just cuz...no morals really, just is faster sometimes, OK for around town--

I'm not a guru (thanks, but no thanks Re: that Label), just a normal person who is into design

bikes for me = better design than most cars...I love to drive thou, and am getting into flying, so I'm on the fence here with the morals issue--

I agree that the present scene is kinda lame, but what right do we have to judge others (about their use of fossil fuels)?

Why cannot others get to enjoy the same luxury that Americans have?
I'm thinking that Americians are a numerical minority...I don't especially associate with the idea of being an American more than just being a person on this planet...nationalistic mentality is lame.

looks like the comments has a spell-checker now! (or maybe I missed it b4)
