Port Militarization Resistance (PMR) has launched a campaign to end our community’s participation in the illegal occupation of Iraq by stopping the US military’s use of the Port of Olympia.
» The campaign is multi-faceted and will include efforts to dissuade the Army from attempting to use the Port of Olympia through public education, communication with public officials, and ultimately, if necessary, nonviolent civil disobedience to block military convoys' access to the Port of Olympia. It is possible that Ft. Lewis will mobilize a Stryker Brigade in April. The Stryker vehicles and other equipment will be shipped in advance of the personnel. This means convoys could be moving within the next month. It isn't known at this time whether the Army plans to use the Port of Olympia. Why is PMR embarking on this campaign? The following is excerpted from the campaign platform: (1) A majority of Americans and local residents oppose the continued occupation of Iraq. An even larger majority opposes President Bush’s escalation. Using the port of Olympia to ship equipment to Iraq goes against the will of the majority in the US and within our community. Therefore we have a democratic responsibility to resist. (2) The occupation of Iraq is a violation of the US constitution and international law. Allowing our publicly financed Port to be used to support the occupation is a violation of Nuremberg Principles and makes our community subject to legal consequences. Therefore we have a legal obligation to resist. (3) The best way to support the troops is to prevent them from being placed into the midst of a civil war where they have a high risk of killing and being killed. Therefore we have a moral and humanitarian obligation to resist. (4) Thurston County’s share of the cost for the occupation of Iraq now exceeds $300 million. Meanwhile, local governments lack sufficient funds to address basic human needs and maintain essential public infrastructure. Therefore we have an economic obligation to resist. PMR has a series of actions planned, including a Festival of Life, to celebrate opposition to what the US government is doing in Iraq. The next PMR meeting is planned for Next Sunday, February 25th, from 4pm to 6pm at a location to be decided. Stay tuned for more information.
