I am fond of the fourth avenue bridge, I walk over it often. The bridge is aging nicely since its creation post-earthquake. I like the design concept.  I especially enjoy all the shells and nuts and other remnants of bird meals left on the wide rails. I've already vigiled on it with hundreds of other people. We've claimed this bridge as our own and it will be used once again this Saturday at noon. (Check Rob Whitlock's blog and the events calendar)

So I have mixed feelings about the graffiti that is now all over the bridge railings. Folks might need to get out of their cars and walk to see the graffiti most clearly, not sure how visible it is from a car. On foot, especially walking from west side to downtown as I was, you will be able to see how extensive it is.

I wish it hadn't been done. But I also wish that the Oly community had been included in that "design concept" I spoke of earlier. Would that have made a difference? My guess is that there is not one monolithic graffiti community and that what works for one artist might not for another.

I don't know how to decode this graffiti, I feel sort of left out of the message, although maybe the intent isn't to be inclusive. Whoever has hit the bridge has also worked up on the west side too, some graffiti on utility boxes looks to be from the same source.

Graffiti has significance to the artist and to the community in both positive (expression) and negative ways (defacing).

I am curious, do you all see this graffiti as expression or vandalism?

Its all over town..

Its all over town..

The same guy apparently by the looks of it..

I question the timing..

Very suspicious..

I haven't seen it yet, but I

I haven't seen it yet, but I am guessing that I won't like it. I would like to have a talk with whoever did it. I would like to ask why he or she did it. What's the goal and intention involved.

I saw the bridge today

Can't say that I think the writing on the bridge is expressive of an artistic sentience. I don't think it's an improvement. It strikes me as an angry person's attempt to act out. Yes - No? thoughts? I would still like to talk to the tagger because I want to understand what's behind it all.

Interview with a Tagger

I hope you do get a chance to talk to the person/people, maybe you can interview them for OlyBlog.

I don't have any ideas on their motivations.

One strange thing I have noticed..

Notice how it always ends up on a piece of public property?

Bridges, government buildings, etc..

Undecided
»

so i've noticed

I've also noticed a number of comments in the Olympian that make reference to defaced public property as a reason to pass the pedestrian egress ordinance.  Good lord, has no one walked on a side walk in NYC during rush hour?  We Olympians have is pretty darn easy.  I've yet to have my travel impeded, I suspect very few, if any, have.

We Olympians have is pretty

We Olympians have is pretty darn easy.

I'm glad you came around to pointing this out to everyone.

On the other hand, do you want Olympia to look like New York City or Southern California in regard to the rampant graffiti?

I know its late Fire..

You may want to make these comments look a little less..

what would the word be..

Egress

The only way my passage is impeded downtown is by sandwich boards from businesses and even that hasn't happened for awhile.
»

motivation

I don't know, but some guesses: acting out feelings of resentment, to feel powerful, territorial urges (marking)... It would be good to truly understand such behavior.

Vandalism

Vandalism
»

Agreed

I define this as vandalism also.

Hmm...let's see: Property

Hmm...let's see: Property isn't owned by the "artist"? Check. Property is marred, defaced, or otherwise altered? Check. Money must be spent if symbols are removed? Check.

Vandalism. Even if it would've been "beautiful", or the "artists" "Honest expression", or if it would have helped me think from another perspective, or if it wasn't easily visible, or if someone else "got it".

Vandalism.

But wherefore thou alone? Wherefore with thee Came not all hell broke loose?

Check

Good points. And along with money spent for removal is the labor involved, which often can mean workers exposed to toxic chemicals in order to remove the graffiti.

I am forever grateful to workers out at Evergreen who told us exactly how graffiti affects them. Sometimes hearing another perspective can make all the difference in understanding an issue.

understanding

Maybe, if I could talk with the tagger, and gain an understanding for the purpose and motive behind the writing, I would come to an appreciation for what has been done. There may be a great reason behind this, a beauty behind the beast.
