Ruby Re-Useable art blogs on Olympia Dumpster Divers, check out her observations of The Olympia Free Wall (alley on Washington street downtown between 4th and 5th).

Included are photos of some of those mysterious dead bird heads.

Recently, someone has been zip-tying these cardboad heads on the pipes (I haven’t seen them anywhere else yet, but I hope they will be all around downtown for Arts Walk).

Olympia Alleys

I must admit I am particularly fond of Olympia's alleys.  With out a doubt they need some sprucing up and Rudv is doing a fine job of sprucing up hers.   In a lot of towns the alleys are pretty well used, often the spaces adjacent to alleys provide low cost housing (i'm not talking about people sleeping in the alley).  Spaces are carved out of alleys for apartments and tiny houses, really very cool.  With urban space going for so much these days we just might start seeing some of this in Olympia, not to mention some retailing going on in alleys (and i'm not talking drug dealing here).  Actually Tacoma did something like this not long ago.  A place called Opera Alley.  It formerly was just an alley and now it has a couple of shops and places to eat along with an alternative theater.  Very cool and a good use of the space.  One of the few things Tacoma has done well.

Alleys

I'm curious if some of Oly's earlier pavement - bricks and such - are best found in alleys.

good question

I suspect that most alleys in Olympia have not been as well kept up as the surface streets.  If there are any bricks or cobblers to be found no doubt they'd be found in the alleys.  I wandered down by the Procession's facilities in the alley earlier today and found it to be a wonderful addition to downtown's landscape.  For sure more of this should go an and better use of the potential of our alleys should be made.  I hope the Procession stays or someone equally committed to this creative use of the space stays if the Procession does not stay.  I suggest all bloggers at least wander by the this particular alley to see this wonderful gift to the street.
