How are you all faring out there? Any damage from the high winds?
» I didn't lose power here but we did go through some brown outs, enough so I finally turned off the computer and lit candles. I took a wonderful walk with a friend last night in the wind while staying clear of those tall swaying trees. Evergreen branches were strewn all over the streets. Timberland Library web page seems to be down still this morning. The Evergreen State College, St. Martin's, and other schools are all closed last time I checked.

Heritage Park apartments (by
Submitted by Merwyn Haskett on Fri, 12/15/2006 - 1:47pm.Trees were crashing everywhere out by Evergreen, and the power kept going out for a few seconds at a time, so finally I was called in the middle of doing the Think Tank and authorized to sign out and shut the transmittor down. As of 1:00 this afternoon KAOS was still off the air.
Leaving early was fine with me since I still had to maneuver around downed trees with more being added every minute it seemed. Something whacked me in the face on my way to the car, just glad it wasn't a branch.
But wherefore thou alone? Wherefore with thee Came not all hell broke loose?

All of my fish are dying..
The whole family (25 people) is huddled together in one persons living room, with a generator turned on.
Wow
Submitted by Norm on Sat, 12/16/2006 - 10:31am.I hope they get the power back on for ya bub.
I actually have power this morning (yesterday I was in the dark and cold dressing/shaving/showering for an interview) My place is an absolute mess but if anyone without power needs a place that's warm, and tiny, feel free to stop by or give me a ring and I'll give directions. I'm a terrible cook but yeah.
EDIT: a little birdy told me to pull my phone #. I don't use it very often, but still, possibly a bad idea. Send me a PM and I'll call you or reply or whatnot
Norm, you are a great person!

How is the family holding up on your end?
There are alot of places if Western Washington still without power..
Clear out in the Shelton and Grays Harbor County..

I hope the interview went well, Norm..
When we finally meet, the pitcher is on me my friend!
My family is doing pretty
Submitted by Norm on Sat, 12/16/2006 - 11:56am.My family is doing pretty well. Parents have the power back on, grandparents don't but they use wood heat and are very used to this sort of thing. We spent 2 weeks without power when I was in high school. Gas stove, large propane tank, and cooking by the wood stove.
I hate to brag...

Submitted by OperaGirl on Sat, 12/16/2006 - 11:42am.Usually we are one of the first areas to get our power back but not so this time! It is finally back on. Luckily we were toasty warm with the woodstove and even pulled our mattress out into the living room to sleep! The only thing that is KILLING me is that I lost about $100 worth of food in the fridge/freezer despite trying to keep it packed with ice. I had just gone to the store the day before in anticipation of my husby and Kid 1 being home for winter break....wah. But at least no trees fell on us!

That's absolutely poor
Submitted by The Fire Inside on Mon, 12/18/2006 - 10:30am.That's absolutely poor planning on their part.
I can't tell you how many of my neighbors put in fireplaces that are powered...by electricity!
I've got one word for everyone when building a house in Washington state: woodstove.
It will heat the house to about a million degrees (give or take) and - shock! - you can cook on top of it.

Submitted by The Fire Inside on Mon, 12/18/2006 - 2:36pm.People seem to rarely consider how they'll operate if there is a lack of (or in this case, no) electricity.
Situations such as this past weekend are where it really pays off to be expecting a "doomsday" scenario in which there is a collapse of infrastructure.
