My fav word of the evening: Grok

As in:

I can't seem to grok why some people hate Evergreen.
I grok linden trees.

I know why, but I can't

I know why, but I can't really explain much beyond the Evergroove Trivia chapters I have already submitted to OlyBlog in Rick's "Books and Collections" option. Well, let me qualify that. I can explain why pre-TESC Olympia residents dislike the school, but this group is diminishing as they die off or move. For those newcomers who arrived or were Oly born after, say 1968, I don't know, although I suspect today's young conservatives who support Bush's imperialistic adventures but who did not experience the Vietnam War era are destined to repeat one of history's mistakes. Speaking as someone who went from Kindergarten to college in this town, from the 50s to the 70s, and has very mixed feelings about Evergroove, I'll say this-- I hate to think what Olympia would be like today without Evergroove. TESC, as Charlie McCann predicted, drug Oly kicking and screaming into the 20th century. I do think Oly is a much better place because of the College, but I also know, due my upbringing in this town, why the locals hate the place so much. Fear.

The key word here is: Fear. We can't let our lives be ruled by fear. And I think that is the word that answers your question, Sarah.

I grok your answer

Yes, that does answer my question, thanks. Explains also what is behind the vehemence I hear when folks express their loathing of TESC.

And here I always thought it

And here I always thought it was jealousy, plain and simple...

As an Olympian who is not

As an Olympian who is not pre-Evergreen, I can offer why I dislike the school.

Ever since I've lived in the area and had gone downtown (which was far less than before I turned 21), I looked around and thought that downtown should look and feel a lot better.

At night it should be busy with commerce. In fact, after my visit to Alexandria, VA, I see Olympia as a place which should mirror Alexandria.

I have also never thought of "Greeners" as taking themselves seriously. You can say it's wrong until you're blue in the face, but when I see people who don't maintain proper personal hygene, the first thought which comes to mind is not that the person is a "freak" or is "weird" but that they must not care much about themselves.

Councilmembers such as TJ Johnson and Laura Ware also seem to have a large TESC-contingent. Since I view Johnson's and Ware's policies as detrimental to the city, this would also count as another "strike" against the college in my book.

There's a variety of other issues which are mainly related to day-to-day encounters of why I dislike the Evergreen culture.

"I am for free commerce with all nations, political connection with none, and little or no diplomatic establishment. And I am not for linking ourselves by new treaties with the quarrels of Europe, entering that field of slaughter to preserve their balance."

Although I don't agree 100%

I really feel that was well put.

And right or wrong, but I

And right or wrong, but I also have a fear of property destruction from the Greener-culture.

In fact, I would be far more afraid of a TESCer intentionally causing private property damage than I would any other "group" in Olympia.

"I am for free commerce with all nations, political connection with none, and little or no diplomatic establishment. And I am not for linking ourselves by new treaties with the quarrels of Europe, entering that field of slaughter to preserve their balance."

As an Evergreen alumna,

I just have to say this: I will punch your computer for letting you type that, after I go spend an hour not washing my hair. People have the same "grouping" tendency with the homeless, young people, the elderly, racial minorities and people of different political persuasions. I'm not here to tell you it's bad and wrong, but I'm certain that it doesn't describe the world accurately and therefore leads to all kinds of limiting your life. Yes, your life. Because that's about four thousand people every year that you're just writing off. Your loss.

I'm comfortable with those

I'm comfortable with those 4,000 people being limited from my life.

Generally speaking, I'm pretty comfortable being around anyone.

I suppose you could call me an Evergreen "separatist." I don't hate the culture but I definately don't want to be around it.

And that's just the way it is.
