Community is not a magic word for getting rid of human assholeness.

Why not?

I'm missing the context, so maybe I'm not getting it. It seems like community is a magic word that combats human assholeness.

I 'think' the context is

I 'think' the context is even though you have a great community, there will always be an asshole floating around. I tend to be more pessimistic, I think that even if we have a utopia going on, there will still be those who seek violent confrontation and get off on it.

True...

...but that individual probably just needs to have his software rebooted.

the context

Sarah's post and marie redshark's response were the initial context.  I think community can be excellent for minimizing human assholeness, as long as member protectionism doesn't outweigh community ideals.  For example, a wealthy and socially valuable (learned, adept speaker, surgeon, whatever) is found to have abused another member of the community but is let off the hook because the community values her skills more than it despises abuse.

"If you are a dreamer, come in. If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, a hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer. If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire, for we have some flax-golden tales to spin. Come in! Come in!"
