Black Cross First Aid: Pepper Spray and Tear Gas

Good info on this site, including:

 During: How to deal

  • STAY CALM. Panicking increases the irritation. Breathe slowly and remember it is only temporary.
  • If you see it coming or get a warning (e.g. police are putting gasmasks on), put on protective gear. If able, try to move away or get upwind.
  • Blow your nose, rinse your mouth, cough and spit. Try not to swallow.
  • If you wear contacts, you must remove the lenses or get someone to remove them for you, with CLEAN, uncontaminated fingers. Destroy the lenses after exposure, they are not cleanable.
  • DO NOT RUB IT IN.

    I just thought I'd add if I

I just thought I'd add if I might. A good portion of what pepper spray/ tear gas does is mental. You feel like you are having a hard time, keep focused on the fact that you are indeed breathing and you are getting MORE than enough breath to survive. The panic part of the above information is imperative, do not panic.

    Agreed

That is important for folks to know, I myself might not have remembered this if I'd been sprayed. Good thing for friends to talk through also, imagine -what if?- scenarios and sort out the agreed upon response.

I notice too that the site has suggestions on who should stay away from such possibilities, never can completely predict when pepper spray will be used, but people with respiratory conditions etc. especially need to be aware.

    Thank you so much, Sarah!

I am so glad you posted this.  I actually printed it and gave it to my companion to read before we went down to the port today.  As it happened, I did breathe in just a little spray, the first time for me, and your advice was very useful.  And Norm, your thoughts were useful, too.  Thank you.

np, I only got the airborn stuff tonight and last night. Glad I didn't get any directly sprayed on me, never fun.
