[Check comment thread for long lost son reference]

A small reddish spider is weaving a web outside one of my windows. I discovered it while cleaning windows and I've decided to leave it alone for now. I assumed this spider would be easy to identify so I sketched out the shape and began googling away, only to find out that I was wrong, spiders are not easy to identify.

The Spider Myths site kept by Rod Crawford of the Burke Museum explains this and all sorts of other intriguing facts about spiders.

Here on OlyBlog we've had a past discussion on another type of spider: hobo spiders.

Every investigation needs a poem to accompany it, the poem The Spider and the Fly by Mary Howitt is perfect.

Careful.  What starts as a small reddish spider might grow into a giant attacking spider that spawns hundreds more baby little red spiders that will go hide somewhere in your house till they become giant attacking red spiders and by then they will be weaving their web around you.

ah hhaaaaaaaaaaa hah haaaaaaaaaaaaaa, careful.

The doctor is correct

Shelob started out as a small reddish spider, and you know what happened with her.

»

Wow.

Holy cats, Olycop, that one was obscure. You must be a big Tolkein fan, no?
»

Hmmm

I have narsil hanging on my wall, but no sting. I'll have to do some ordering.
»

Narsil

I had to look narsil up to remind me what it is.

Trivia question: what runes are on it in movies?
»

Oh

Translated from Sindarin: "Narsil is my name, a mighty sword; Telchar made me in Nogrod."

Or if you prefer Sindarin: "Narsil essenya, macil meletya; Telchar carneron Navarotesse."

Unless you mean the reforged blade: "I am Anduril who was Narsil, the sword of Elendil. Let the thralls of Mordor flee me."

I am not worthy

Oh my, I'm in awe!
»

Shelob

Shelob and I already have an agreement, she stays in books/films/video games and I won't develop arachnophobia.
»

A fan yes

But our friend Norm is in at a different level than most.

I have Sindarin on my body, which I will share at a Broho meeting.

»

OMG

*GASP* Sindarin on your body?! Have I mentioned you are my hero?
»

As time goes on

You and I Norm are very much alike.

You might be a long lost son, LOL

»

So sweet

I'll leave the double post up unless you bribe me to take it down, the repetition has a poetic flow to it in this thread. Sort of like Norm is your long lost son and you gotta repeat things slowly and wisely.

Sweet.
»

Ooops.

I deleted it -- Sorry.
»

Hey hey!

I was practicing my bargaining skills here maaaaaan!

Though, as Caiman Master, you do have the right.

Maybe I could claim you owe me something for doing your job right in deleting a doubled post that OlyCop posted that I was sneakily trying to bargain for beer while OlyCop offered a box full of tarantulas. All while a long lost son was discovered.

[100 degrees is too hot for Olympia]
»

Sarah

How about a box of tarantulas mailed to you so when you open it up they all jump on you and then run to hiding spots in your house??!!

Is that the kind of bribe you were thinking of?WinkInnocent

»

Not exaaactly.......

.......more like I get to know in advance when you will show at the Broho, plus one glass of Guinness.

See, the thing about the box of tarantulas, I've been reading up on all sorts of safety stuff, including about mystery boxes, so I'd follow my intuition and not open the box, and if it especially concerned me cause it was making noises, I'd call OPD and ask them to visit. To check out the box that somebody sent me.

Smile
Do you want the second post deleted? I can do that without extortion required.

Hey yeah, Olycop, when ARE

Hey yeah, Olycop, when ARE you going to show up at the Broho? It's impolite to stand up 10 people all at once, you know... ...er, twice, that is. Really, you should have seen us all prettied up and patiently waiting, flowers in hand. Devastating to be stood up like that. Devastating.
»

Twenty years later, when

Twenty years later, when we're all old spinsters, long pined-away and no longer bothering with the flowers. We still watch the ocean now, but more from habit than longing.
»

Better flowers than knives

Yeah Phil, I'm sure you guys are all broke up at my absence, lol.

I do want to come to some meetings at the Broho, but this is a bad time of the year.  We are trying to get our "stuff" done before leaving on vacation.  And on top of that, we are outdoors people so we are making use of the good weather before it goes back to the 9 months of rain.  So we play from daylight to dark if we aren't working.  And if those aren't enough complications, Sandy's work schedule makes things difficult.  I want her to come to a meeting too, so she can meet all you fine people.  I think she is over being mad at Drew, so I doubt there will be any bloodshed. Wink(just kidding)

So in reality, it's likely we won't make a meeting until September.  So party hardy, and we will see you soon.

Speaking of seeing you soon, I will be doing a walking patrol gig downtown again next Wednesday and Thursday from 7-5, so say hi if we cross paths.

Sarah

I certainly can buy you a beer, no need to bargain for it!

Boy, the list of those who I owe a beer grows.  When we do get together, the Broho's profit margin will be up that night!

Sarah, you do know your beer.  Back when I was a beer drinker, Guinness was one of my favorites.  Now I'm a Scotch and wine fan.

»

I rarely drink and a little

I rarely drink and a little goes a long way when I do, I'm a lightweight. I love Guinness and other stouts. Eventually I want to learn about good wines.
»

Speaking of long-lost relatives...

Sarah, did you notice that you've now got a doppleganger? Sarah2, you should introduce yourself to us.
»

I'm doubled

I occasionally have trouble logging into OlyBlog, doesn't matter what browser I'm using, or the cookie situation, if cache is full or empty. Sounds like some other folks are having this happen also.

This time I could see the name Sarah in the list, but I was not logged in, putting in password and name only got me a blank page. I rebooted, no luck.

Some folks have had luck by just starting up another membership, so I tried that, but this has been my unlucky day, and Sarah2 did not work either. But it also showed up in the list.

So there I was, wanting to post a comment, with two of my names on the list, and unable to do anything cause I wasn't logged in.

I did the best thing possible, turned off the computer and went to visit a friend.

Now, everything works, and my poor Sarah2 is no longer needed. Alas.
»

How dare you!

How could you say such a thing! "...no longer needed"?! What about her feelings! Even dopplegangers got feelings you know! She's probably off pouting in a virtual corner of the world wide web, even as we speak. Poor thing.
»

Uh oh

You know, I actually grew up with doppelganger stories, you'd think I'd know better. But I don't know how to appease a pouting doppelganger. I might just ask Rick to..you know.......feed her to the caimans.
»

Wait! Wait! Does she have a

Wait! Wait!
Does she have a beating heart yet? That should factor into it.
»

Oh yeah

Nope, no pulse. No legs either. Just a clone - do caimans eat clones? Ooo or maybe we could use it as bait in a nefarious caiman-hassling scheme. We could lure a caiman to focus on it as a possible meal, while we hustle all the children and cute puppies out of the area.

Don't tell any caimans of our plan.
