On my walk down into town, I came across something that fully expresses Olympia in all her many guises to me. I truly needed a trumpet to blow and a town crier to declare "This is Olympia.".

This something was found after a lovely walk crunching through all manner of autumn leaves. I was drenched in color, having walked through and under and past gorgeous trees. My walk couldn't get any better but it did, someone, some intrepid Olympian had selected a huge bright yellow maple leaf with just a trace of lace fraying and had then duct taped it by the stem to a sign post. Right about at eye level.

You know, I have all sorts of other things to add to my description of my Oly Sunday: the woman who told me "Thank God for alcohol.", the man who showed me the stitches holding one of his fingers on, that other man who spoke to me passionately about the need for humanity to be honest with one another, the sound of the military shouts at the men doing timed runs down by Heritage Park, that baby that stared at me and cooed, or the fact that I now really need a nap. But what can be said after finding a yellow maple leaf duct taped to a post?

that's awesome

"If you are a dreamer, come in. If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, a hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer. If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire, for we have some flax-golden tales to spin. Come in! Come in!"

Fall in the Shenedoahs

Fall always brings back vibrant memories from my college days of hitchhiking with friends out to the Appalacian trail. We'd thumb rides in the back of pickup trucks and in hippie vans with love and peace signs and make our way to the Shenendoahs (well we did until one couple got busted for doing it). But once we got there, we'd go down a steep trail to a boyscout shelter and spend the night, cooking spam over a campfire and smearing peanut butter on rolls stolen from the cafeteria. (Don't ever cook spam over a candle by the way. It tastes very bad.) The night sky was like a glittering blanket of stars up there (even if someone did step on those mountains long ago and flatten them. Truthfully they are more like foothills).

Come morning it was like dawn set the forest on fire: golden and red and brown and crisp and smelling of molting leaves everywhere. We'd linger over stale rolls and frost bitten peanut butter and boil some coffee from a thermos, then make our way back, exhausted and smelly. I love the sound of crunching leaves to this day, huge carpets of them made for rolling in.

I need to go back some day. But this time I'll rent a car haha. And I'll take a coffee pot and jerky. No spam. Well maybe a little for old times sake. But over a fire, no candles.

Hugs, Crusty Crunchy Christie haha
