Some of us are mellower and more relaxed in the summer. Sunlight also invigorates us. We feel more hopeful and inspired. It is Summertime and the livin' is easy.

Winter, not so much. The crispness of a good September can all too soon mush to a gray on gray Winter of dismal dank and slush. Everything is gloomy and we would ideally retreat to a cozy cave and wait til the first Spring flowers bloom.

So, what to do? We have Summer realizations and inspirations that we can apply to help make our next Winter a little less dreary. One idea is to write a letter to our Winter selves. What would we, all sunny and reasonably carefree now, like to tell our future selves?

During the Winter do we drink more than we want to? Are we more isolated than is comfortable? Do we get less exercise but need more? Do we lose sight of some inspiration and motivation that once captured, helps tremendously?

These letters or videos or blog posts to our Winter selves could be in the form of a motivational pep talk, a friendly encouraging letter, a reminder that this too.... this season shall pass, maybe even a list of resolutions. Maybe a poem or song that really does it to us now could be saved for a Winter review.

Maybe someone can figure out how to capture warm golden sun light in a bottle, one that can be opened on the Winter night of most drear.

What a great idea

Sarah, thank you for this post.  Without a doubt you have provided me with a necessary bit of wisdom for the coming days ahead.  The world is one of cycles.  The easy ones to recognize are the seasons, even in a place like Olympia.  When I first came to the northwest I equipped myself with two, what I considered necessary, items.  A very good rain coat and a very good umbrella.  The rain coat made me look like a fat Columbo and the umbrella made me look like the Penguin from Batman.  I learned to eschew the rain coat and umbrella and embrace the rain.  Most in the northwest do.  The rain is the northwest, your life is what you do around the rain.  The rain is no reason to make a plan or change a plan. The weather always changes, why should you?

"I would make it impossible for the covetous and avaricious to utterly impoverish the poor. The rich can take care of themselves."

My winter hymn is an Ezra

My winter hymn is an Ezra Pound poem that Jade handwrote and stuck to my mirror while she was living in my room. It's like a little candle in the dark.
Winter is Icummen in
(Ezra Pound)

Winter is icummen in,
Lhude sing Goddamm,
Raineth drop and staineth slop
And how the wind doth ramm!
Sing: Goddamm.
Skiddeth bus and sloppeth us,
An ague hath my ham.
Freezeth river, turneth liver
Damn you, sing: Goddamm.
Goddamm, Goddamm, tis why I am,
Goddamm.
So 'gainst the winter's balm
Sing Goddamm, damm, sing Goddamm
Sing Goddamm, sing Goddamm,
DAMM.

Have you seen that movie

Have you seen that movie "Box of Moonlight" with Sam Rockwell and John Turturro? It's one of my favorites. Go get it at Rainy Day and watch it. It's exactly what you need.

I'll get it

I haven't seen it yet and I like John Turturro a lot. Thanks for the suggestion!
