In Lieu of recent concerns for the protest tonight at the Capital Playhouse, we will NOT be blockading the playhouse due to possible police action(brutality) and also concerning protestors with previous criminal backgrounds, mostly the unhoused population. It would not be wise to endanger homeless protesters - however, we need as much support as possible.

what we WILL be doing, though is continuing a public display/public protest of the ordinances directly at the mouth of the beast, the Capital Playhouse. I noticed on the blog that a number of citizens/olympians were concerned with how this display is going down. it will be non-violent and under the guise of no organization.

i encourage you all to rid yourselves of dogmatic thinking, theory and fear of both the city council and the actions they will take
against the denizens and patrons of downtown olympia.

let's face the facts...

they passed the ordinance, and we need relentless action against the city council's decision.

slogvomit doesn't have time for such petty questions.

Thanks.

I'm feeling really relieved.  Really relieved.  It's good to start getting on the same page.

We should do some strategizing meetings, no?  Get different people and organizations together to plan a well coordinated response?

BTW, I'm having a hard time with your handle, slogvomit.  Is there something else I could call you?  Maybe just SV?

I helped organize this protest

And i have been passing out flyers on it all day. My intention of this protest was to keep it peaceful by any means neccesary, due to the fact that parents COULD be taking their children to see this event. With kids involved we want to make sure that no one can get hurt in this event, but also that our message gets across to the public that we will not lie down because the city council has voted their opinion. I suggest to come out to the protest this evening, and if u have any material or meetings that are coming up to keep our struggle going in the right direction than it is accepted.

WHY THE CAPITAL PLAYHOUSE? this action cuts to the jugglar of the corporations that backed up the ordinance and due to the ironic nature of jeff kingsbury playing SCROOGE it is a platform where we can get our word across that the people will not take their vote as an answer or their silly amendmants and that WE THE PEOPLE should have more of a say in what is good for our community.

This also shows the homeless community, the business community, and our local pedestrians that we WILL NOT let them get away with passing this ordinance under our noses without US getting a word in...

So... please join us tonight in exercising OUR 1RST AMMENDMENT RIGHT as a citizen in the first round of this battle to find peace, equality, and justice on our city streets...

and just maybe, just maybe.. we as a people can come up with a proper solution to our homeless issue, and our BEHAVIOR issues without making the common man a criminal... Over something as petty as sitting down chatting with friends, or putting a sandwich board outside your business without a permit...

sad articles about the LAW

radical! we need to set an example for the world to be kind and compassionate. reading these articles about the same kind of laws being passed everywhere is very sad for me. it shouldn't happen here. wee need to stop this. thanks.

"An unfortunate trend in cities around the country over the past 25 years has been to turn to the criminal justice system to respond to people living in public spaces.  This trend includes measures that target homeless persons by making it illegal to perform life-sustaining activities in public.  These measures prohibit activities such as sleeping/camping, eating, sitting, and begging in public spaces, usually including criminal penalties for violation of these laws. "

" On three separate occasions, the Berkeley City Council discussed the proposed "Problematic Street Behavior" ordinances... sound familiar?

Many cities across the country have homeless laws, falling into a few general categories. Panhandling is restricted or banned altogether (Massachusetts passed a law of this kind several years ago but it was struck down by the state courts as unconstitutional). Anti-camping ordinances, such as in Austin, Texas, prohibit sleeping on streets or in parks after curfew or at all. And in many cities, the homeless are excluded from downtown areas and places where they congregate. Austin and Los Angeles, for instance, have no-standing zones and no-sitting areas where people may not linger. There are also such arcane laws as the prohibition of public parking lot crossing in Atlanta.
