When I was a kid attending Roosevelt on the Eastside of Oly, there was a joke that was told and retold. All these years later the enigma of this exchange still haunts my mind:

Kid #1: Guess what?
Kid #2: What?
Kid #1: That's what!

Now, just exactly what does this mean? And please don't answer, "That's what!" In college I found myself wondering what Al Camus would've said about this.

When I lived in Spokane and then Olympia the answer was "That's What!", but when I lived in Aberdeen and then Ocean Shores the answer was "Chicken Butt" (the Ocean Shores variant continued with "frying in grease, want a piece?"

On my honor

I grew up with the answer being both "That's What!" and "Chicken Butt".

Today while browsing through birthday greeting cards I was stunned to find a card which read on cover "Guess What?" with inside reading "Chicken Butt! Happy Birthday". On my honor, I tell no lie, I actually did see this. Inside also was a drawing of a stick figure bird thing, didn't look like a chicken to me, but I suppose you could say that a chicken was implied.

What does that joke have to do with birthdays? I am so confused.
