We may as well call it the People's Republic of the West Coast.

Reuters:

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California filed a global warming lawsuit on Wednesday against Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp., Toyota Motor Corp. and three other automakers, charging that greenhouse gases from their vehicles have cost the state millions of dollars.

It also charges that vehicle emissions have contributed significantly to global warming and harmed the resources, infrastructure and environmental health of the most populous state in the United States.

Yup

Most everything bad or wacked out gets its start in California.

The funny thing is, California is the state that pushed the catalytic converter issue years ago. Now they want the auto manufacturers to pay for the results of what they were forced to do by California in the first place. Now that's California thinking at its finest.

"The strongest reason to retain the right to keep and bear arms is to protect against tyranny in government." Thomas Jefferson.

I think your underlying

I think your underlying assumption is that manufacturers are forced to manufacture. They are not. I understand that, for businesses, it is difficult to keep up with current science and be responsible for the impacts of what you create. That said, I don't have much pity for folks in a multi-million-dollar industry who absolutely refuse to innovate and adapt. If it takes regulations, then it takes regulations. I think it shouldn't take regulations, but that's assuming that the auto industry gets the memo ten years ago (which apparently they didn't) about CO2.
