The Olympian:

With the cost of running the city climbing faster than revenue, budget cuts are becoming an annual event and officials say they cannot afford to spend as much on Lakefair.

In 2003, the festival lost its biggest sponsor when Miller brewery closed.

Read that last sentence and then think about the role of government. Living-wage jobs in Olympia? LOTT forced out about 400 of them, along with the money Miller was extremely generous with regarding community events.

I think you need to fiddle around with the tags a bit, TFI. I can read it in "Edit" mode.

I think we should change the

I think we should change the name of the fair to the NutriaFair. Nutria based entertainment would be great, and not to mention the spicy cajun nutria dishes.

Get Creative with Lakefair

I don't see the city's limited contribution as tragic. It's a contribution, whatever they give. The rest we should be able to do for ourselves. Vendors make money off their space don't they? And artisans? And carnival rides? Don't charge or tax them for their space; waive the profits. Entertainers like to entertain. We could be novel and use the ones that love Olympia. Let them do some jamming up there and play the songs they write, as well as predetermined requests. Olympia has lots of radical musicians.

It sounds like the event needs some creative organization and drumming up free stuff. I think that would make it a community event. What about one of the local nonprofits, like Media Island? There are lots of possibilities.

I am the opposite of an organizer; I only arrange anarchies. But if anyone else will go swimming in Capitol Lake with the nutria, I'm on board! It's too cold January 1st! I always go out there and chicken out. I think I can even fit in my bathing suit again. Or we could make it a clothing optional swim, like the beach at Evergreen. Issue blinders at a park entry point. I would like to take my dog though. One year they locked out dogs. I will cure her of her butt sniffing fixation before we go near the clothing optional swim.

We need to loosen up and have some good clean cheap fun. Our tax dollars are better spent on the less fortunate. I don't see why the city should entirely fund our event. This way we can do it our own way, through a cool community organizer.
