Click here to link to the audio from the OMJP forum "Homeless in Olympia."

The forum was well attended and hopefully it will inspire those who attend it to act.

Many thanks to Food Not Bombs for feeding the audience and speakers, as well as to all those who spoke at the forum

thanks for posting the audio

i think the forum was important enough to share with those that couldn't make it there.  Finally a good use for an ipod as well.

iPod Audio Quality

The one I had, before my bath ruined it, it was a 2004 20GB model, had noticeably poor audio quality, compared to CDs or even the "same" copies of songs from computer. Maybe the new pods are better though.

iPods

iPods are not evil, but they can be isolating.  Listening to music, listening to books or podcasts are fine things. Same with computers.  I worry about any technology when it becomes isolating.  In the past i have found it far easier to engage strangers in conversation without the iPods.  It almost seems to me a person in public with an iPod doesn't want to talk to anyone.  They will see your lips move, they will shrug and point to the iPod and move along.  Of course that response may only be directed to me.  An iPod may be a Crenshaw Sepulveda repellant.

I agree

I enjoy bus rides more now, without iPod, because I have conversations with people. It bothers me when people put on their headphones in public and tune out. It's anti-social. People need to be able to talk with each other. It's part of combating a fear based mentality.
»

I don't agree

Yes, I agree that we all need to have the ability to talk with each other, that sometimes the best conversations happen spontaneously, that talking can be good, and that social is fun. But I do not believe choosing at times to be solitary in a crowd, or quiet, or in need of space to think and dream, or the choice to listen to music on the bus.......is at all bad, automatically anti-social, or necessarily grounded in a fear based mentality.

The way I use my iPod shuffle is when I'm taking long solitary walks and want the addition of music to complement my experience, or sometimes on the bus when I am tired and need to rest. I don't ever try to talk with people while my earphones are in use, that would feel rude. And I don't use the iPod in any shops or restaurants, I certainly don't expect clerks to check out my groceries while I listen to music or chatter on a cell phone.

I guess the older I get the more I am an advocate for accepting differences and of being skittish of blanket generalizations. Sometimes the very best thing a person can do is seek solitary focus amidst the busy of the world. Sometimes the very best thing a person can do is to dive in fully to the busy world and enjoy, participate, commune. Me, I believe it is all good.

are you reading that?

Years ago David Brenner told this joke.  David is riding on a NYC subway sitting on a newspaper.  A nearby passenger asks him if he's reading the paper.  David says yes.  Every so often David would get up turn the page and sit down on the paper again.

I don't think that iPods are awful, terrible things.  I have used mp3 players myself.  Sometimes on a bus, sometimes on a walk.  Sometimes for some quick musical therapy.  Haven't used one in quite a while, but I know the times I do miss it.  Our world is being changed by technology.  The gadgets we have today are tools that really are not very familiar to us.  We have no real experience using them, but are very ready to adopt them.  The societal changes, for good or bad, technology brings has yet to show its true impact.  I guess my approach to adopting technology is to really consider how you are going to use it and consider how it is going to change you, it will change you.  How it changes you is up to you.

The David Brenner joke actually has a point.  The world of our past, the days before iPods, cell phones, and walkmen, was a wonderful place that revealed itself to you in the most unexpected ways.  I'd hate to miss some of the wonderful things the world has to offer.

Yeah

We have no real experience using them, but are very ready to adopt them. The societal changes, for good or bad, technology brings has yet to show its true impact. I guess my approach to adopting technology is to really consider how you are going to use it and consider how it is going to change you, it will change you. How it changes you is up to you.

Beautifully stated.

New technology like cell phones and iPods are changing us more than most of us know, changing our
landscape. We can let ourselves be lulled into waking sleep or we can pay attention and make choices.

This discussion also reminds me of how many of us are endangering our hearing as we adapt to more and more piped into our ears music.

It almost seems to me a

It almost seems to me a person in public with an iPod doesn't want to talk to anyone.

The reason I wear my iPod when I'm walking on campus from lecture to lecture and while on an airplane.

In short, you're right about your hunch.

I don't often do it, but you

I don't often do it, but you are right about that hunch. I even do it at work when I have paperwork that needs to be finished and people need to leave me alone. If done frequently I can see how this would be isolating. I imagine if I took public transportation often though, there would be days when I'd have the Ipod on because I didn't want to share my grumpiness with anyone. I wouldn't take it personally Crenshaw, sometimes it's for the best.
