Greetings! December 21, the longest night of the year, is National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day. WSCH will be hosting its 2nd annual Homeless Persons' Memorial Day for Washington State on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 4 pm on the Capitol Steps in Olympia. Join us for a candlelight vigil where we will read the names of everyone we know of in our state who has died homeless or as a result of homelessness in the last year, and Governor Gregoire's proclamation recognizing December 21 as National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day.

Ken Kraybill of the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, and Craig Rennebom, a Mental Health Chaplain (http://www.mentalhealthchaplain.org/), will speak at the service.

Please also visit the following websites for more information on National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day: National Coalition for the Homeless www.nationalhomeless.org National Health Care for the Homeless Council www.nhchc.org

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Thanks V-ster.

Remembering those who have died is important.

Here are the names of those who have died (at least those who I knew) in Olympia in the last few years:

Terry "Crusty" Seibert
Jimbo
Sue Kennedy
John Roe
Stephan James
Jeff
Jennifer
David Gaines

There are stories on my blog about Stephan and Terry, if you would like to know who they were.

My list is pretty incomplete.  These are just the folks who I was friends with and whose deaths I could recall.  Meta and Rob and many other olybloggers could probably add a lot to this list.

Yes, I'm sure there are many more,

and perhaps many who remain nameless.  It is important to remember those who have died, humanizing those who are judged, discriminated and violated against.  I lived in fear for many years that I would receive a phone call letting me know that my father died on the street in some unnamed town.  Fortunately that didn't happen.  Thank you for sharing your stories, and sharing yourself in the process.
