Does anyone know what happened to the bus shelter at harrison & division? i noticed today that it is gone again.
» You may recall that it was removed in 2002 because the owner of the pharmacy adjacent to it asked intercity transit to remove it (link), and then it was back a few months later because the pharmacy changed hands. Does anyone know the story this time? |

I called intercity transit to ask about this
Submitted by Chris Allert on Mon, 09/25/2006 - 10:51am.i'd also urge everyone else who cares about this to call them. they can be reached at 360 786 1881.
also, i must correct the above story. the bus shelter was not replaced because the shopkeeper complaining about it sold the shop. it was replaced at the request of the shopkeeper because so many people complained after reading about it in works in progress ( http://www.olywip.org/old_site/www.olywa.net/wip/May2002/Announce.html )
of course i haven't heard back from intercity transit whether it is simply being replaced this time, but in any case, i think it is completely unacceptable for the transit agency to remove a bus shelter without any notice or explanation. and so i think whatever the reason for its removal this time, we're justified in raising at least a little bit of a ruckus.
it's important for there to be a shelter on that corner because it's such a high-traffic area, and you shouldn't have to wait for a downtown bus in the wind and rain with all your bags from the dollar store and the grocery outlet. so please call 360-786-1881 to let them know that you noticed that the bus shelter is gone.
i will post what intercity transit tells me about this if they get back to me.
you may also want to ask them why they took all the garbage cans away from the bus stops. does anyone know who sets police for intercity transit and if there's some way for us to vote for someone else? a driver was telling me that it's some kind of self-appointed board of old-money families, but i wouldn't believe that without verifying it. nothing on the web-site though, so maybe it's true...
intercity transit and deguarmo's pharmacy respond
Submitted by Chris Allert on Mon, 09/25/2006 - 11:13am.this is of course, one of the stops that used to have a garbage can, but that no longer does. the transit person also told me that they are planning to move the stop to a nearby location, but haven't found one yet.
i then called deguarmo's pharmacy. the person working there said that they had asked that the stop be moved to another location, but she doesn't see how removing the shelter will help with the litter if the stop doesn't move.
please call deguarmo's at 360 709 9999 and ask them to ask intercity transit to replace the shelter until the stop is actually moved. the person at the pharmacy agreed that removing the shelter does nothing but make people needlessly suffer in the wind and rain.
it's important to call them on this. if you call and complain and the shelter is not replaced immediately, you can only assume that deguarmo's is not in fact asking that the shelter be replaced, and that intercity transit doesn't care if you have to wait for their bus in the rain.
This really sucks
Submitted by Sarah on Mon, 09/25/2006 - 11:36am.That bus shelter is so important, high traffic area, several bus routes, necessary place for shelter and seating.
Yes, it was sometimes pretty trashed out, especially with cigarette butts. Intercity Transit honestly seemed to do what it could, they did have a trash can, they did clean regularly.
This is pretty much a revisiting of what happened last time the shelter was removed.
I've heard that the florist shop owners don't want the bus stop anywhere near them either.
I got this reply from I.T. today via email:
-------
The shelter was removed per the property owner's request. It will not
be replaced unless the property owner agrees to have it replaced on
their property. Sorry.

So, as Chris says, Rich DeGarmo is the one to talk to.
Blech.
(Additional thought: in my experience, I.T. does care, they have all along, but they are stuck in this situation because they do not own all that piece of property.)
They'll care if so many
Submitted by Chris Allert on Mon, 09/25/2006 - 11:50am.Oh look! Rich DeGarmo is a member of Westwood Baptist!
Submitted by jlw on Mon, 09/25/2006 - 10:35pm.Check it out! http://www.settingcaptivesfree.com/ComingEvents/conference_old.php How about we get a pilgrimage of soaked, unhappy bus riders to show up at church some rainy Sunday with loads of dripping shopping bags? And then we can ostentatiously pray for shelter! What is it that that scripture says? "Seek and ye shall find, ask and it shall be given"? Let’s ask God for a bus shelter! Surely He doesn't like to see people standing in the rain. A pregnant woman on a donkey would be a nice touch.
any suggestions?

Shelter
Submitted by Sarah on Tue, 09/26/2006 - 6:17am.When The Medicine Shoppe switched to being a compounding pharmacy only, that meant that low-income folks could no longer get their regular meds there. This made a huge difference to the west side.
Removing the bus shelter for the second time affects a hell of a lot of people.
