I just attended a program at my grandchildren's kindergarten class.  They attend a Christian school in Centralia.

The teacher is getting them to memorize scripture, the preamble to the Constitution, the Ten Commandments and other information.  What really caught my eye, was the flag salute.

First, we did the Pledge to the American Flag.  Then they recited a pledge to the Christian flag (something new to me) that was hung in a superior position to the American Flag.

A couple of thoughts came to my mind - (1) the American flag is always to be positioned higher than other flags displayed and (2) pledging to a Christian flag would see to be somewhat of a worship of idol.  It seems that some Christian denominations avoid the American flag pledge because "nothing is superior to God", thus a "Christian Flag" (which I know doesn't represent ALL of Christianity would be somewhat idolatry.

Can anyone provide me with additional information of this?

All I can say...

Is that school has been doing that for at least 20 years.
»

It could be that they simply had it improperly displayed.

The American flag doesn't have to be higher than the others at all times. Sometimes if they are on the same level, like on poles indoors, to the best of my knowledge the American flag should either bein infront of, to the right of, or in the center of other flags. Or some combination of those three. C.

One of the great non sequiturs of the left is that, if the free market doesn't work perfectly, then it doesn't work at all-- and the government should step in.

According to the ettiquette

As posted by Onry:

"12. When displayed from a staff in a church or public auditorium on or off a podium, the flag of the United States of America should hold the position of superior prominence"

»

Yes that is why I said it was possible it was a simple mistake.

Hmmm

That's a new one for me. US flag being below any other flag, within our borders, is not right imo. It's also against federal flag etiquette(sp?) but not really illegal.

DC

Could be, I'm not that familiar with it.

As a cradle Methodist, I've never seen a "Christian" flag nor a salute to same.

Norm - correct on the ettiquette.  That was one of the things that caught me by surprise.  They were making such a conscious effort to be "patriotic" and didn't display the flag in accordance.

CCS

was a sudo-Pentecostal school when I was there. We pledged allegiance to the Christian nation, with the understanding it was a minority in America (at the time... '84-90').

One of my earliest memories was when I got in trouble for asking a guest speaker about Petra, a "Christian Rock" band. The speaker was insisting "Rock and Roll" was an obscene allegory of the 1960's for sexual intercourse. I mentioned "Christian Rock" to him in the daily 8-9 am seminary and ended up staying after school for a few weeks reciting scripture. Talk about confusing...

I left the school in 6th grade to attend public schools. I was fighting too often with teachers and certain other students.

To it's credit, when I entered public schools I was at least 3 years ahead of my classmates in math, science and reading, and was immediately enrolled in the gifted students programs. Smaller class sizes really can pay off.

And in case anyone was too

And in case anyone was too lazy to do a Google search, this is what it looks like:

Smaller class sizes

Absolutely!  These five year olds were memorizing far more than other children their same age (I have lots of grandchildren).

There were only about a dozen kids in the classroom.  Lower teacher to child ratios will always pay off with better quality instruction.  I learned that while trying to coach a football team for 11-13 year olds with only two coaches.

My wife's daughter and her husband do practice in a Pentecostal styled church, thus the connection.

I've spoken to practicing mainstream Christians in the past day that know of the Christian flag but don't display or salute it.

I did notice that it was displayed and saluted in the movie Jesus Camp.

Pedging and idolatry are different things to most Christians

but pledging to a Christian flag is really quite odd. I guess "under God" isn't sufficient.

I thought only Catholics were "Idol Worshippers".

I understand the whole "God before Country" thing, but I'm also remembering something about a Golden Calf.

And cannibals.

Don't forget we're also cannibals. Did you hear that the Pope invented a new diet communion wafer? It's fat free and has no calories. They're not sure what to call it yet, but the advertising slogan is "I can't believe it's not Jesus."

Well, how much fat and

Well, how much fat and calories and carbs were already in the Body and Blood? Was it Trans Fat? Does Jesus imported from China or Mexico have high concentrations of lead? Could we have Fortified Jesus, with Beta Carotene? I'd heard of Purple Jesus in the acid days of my youth but never Orange.

In fact that reminds me, Catholics are more ecologically responsible than Protestants because we're Green.

Anyone remember the Vatican flag?

I remember there being one in St. Mikes school when I was a kid, and certainly at the parish I attended in Delaware.

By the way, I heard that Fred Phelps' church is going to have to pay buko bucks for some of their funeral protests.  Something like a 100 grand?
