There has been much discussion about confrontational styles of conversation on Olyblog and other media where we rely on the written word.  It is easy to misunderstand the intent of a statement when all you can see is the written word on a page or screen.

I encourage everyone to catch the press conference with President Bush from this morning to see real confrontation in action.  David Gregory asked him a simple question about his position on a bombing incident between Syria and Israel.  Bush's response?  "I'm not going to comment on that."  Gregory, being an excellent journalist, did a followup rephrase of the question.  Bush's response?  "I'm not going to comment on that."  When Gregory attempted a third rephrase, Bush got plain surly - "what don't you understand about me not commenting on that?"

President Bush, let me be the one to tell you that this is a press conference.  They ask questions, you answer them.  Your antagonistic attitude will get you nowhere.  You were exposed this morning for precisely what you are - a dictatorial person that either forgot the operations of our country or just someone that doesn't give a damn.

I'm embarrassed for him that he didn't have the sense to not display such a behavior on national TV.

November of 2008 can't come soon enough.

What the heck? How is not

What the heck? How is not answering a question being confrontational? The reporter was being confrontational. When he didn't get an answer to a question he tried to rephrase it. You would think after saying he wasn't going to comment, for the second time, that the reporter would get it. He should have told the reporter that the interview was over after the second time. Just because it's a press conference doesn't mean he has to answer any question that is posed.

Well, Norm

I'm getting the idea you didn't see the footage, but I could be wrong.

If Bush doesn't want to answer questions from the press, just send out the puffed up press release, or have softball reporters in the crowd to ask set up questions and don't call on pros like Gregory.  This was the 40th press conference that Bush has held in over 300 weeks in office. That says a ton.

Maybe you could share with me another President in history that has gotten away with blowing off the press, thus blowing off the American people.

Wasn't Bush Sr. the one who

Wasn't Bush Sr. the one who popularized "I'm not going to dignify that question with a response."

The guy is a complete idiot

The guy is a complete idiot Larry, and probably confrontational about many things in his career, I just don't think this qualifies. I didn't see the video, you might link it if it's important to the story, I'm going by what you typed here.

If anyone is being confrontational I would say it's the reporter. Of course he's paid to be like that but that doesn't change what he was doing. As you pointed out below, Bush isn't the only President to give the "no comment" bit. I'm sure that the 2 Bushes and Reagan aren't the only ones as well.

There are all kinds of reasons to trash Bush, the information you presented about this interview, just isn't one of them, at least in my mind.

I'm going to stick with my original comment. We've talked about this before and I'm not waivering in my thoughts on the subject.....

oops my bad

That will have to wait until I get home though.

Oh...Norm

I'll answer my own question.  Reagan had a penchant for avoiding Sam Donaldson.  There is a great story that goes with it, but considering that it contains dialog that has to do with sexual practices, I'll not post it here.  My last joke on that subject was met with great misunderstanding.

Is it true that Bush said

Is it true that Bush said Nelson Mandela is dead?

Way back when times were simpler my Dad asked me when school was letting out. I didn't know the exact date and said as much.

He thought I was just trying to be difficult so he tried again.

"When's the last day you have classes?" - I don't know.

"When's the last day the bus takes you to school?" - I don't know. He started getting pissed.

"When's the last day teachers have students in their class?" - I don't know.

At this point I told him no matter how he phrased it I wasn't going to know the last day of school, what part couldn't he get through his head?

Of course he concluded that I was refusing to answer. In fact, I was the one causing problems in the exchange.
