It has come to my attention that OlyBlog is now copying entire articles from EverydayOlympia.com and OlympiaStandard.com for use on OlyBlog (here). I would like to know if this is considered acceptable behavior by the OlyBlog community or if this is the action of one person.

While I understand the value of cross promoting community websites I struggle to see how hosting entire articles on OlyBlog benefits these other local sources. As I respect my fellow community members I would like your input. Is this acceptable behavior for OlyBlog? Should I as an independent author feel a greater need to more zealously protect the work I put so much time and effort into?

OlyBlog is in a unique position in the Olympia community. It reaches out to over 2,000 Olympians every day as an information source and potentially serves to empower true grassroots community efforts. How is this empowering? How do my fellow community members propose I respond to this sort of behavior and what sort of precedent does this set?

Please respond to me off of OlyBlog: dreamsjung(at)yahoo(dot)com.

Hey...

...nice to hear your voice again, if only for a moment...

Copy?

It's an rss feed that automatically collects stories from several sites in Olympia, including Olympia Bulletin, Olympia Standard, and Everyday Olympia. As more sites begin to produce content, they'll be added to the feed -- that's why it's called: "Local Newswire."

I like to add a second side to the story

And that's something I already mentioned on olYFORUMS.

Yes, since you have the technology, technically speaking you can RSS feed anything you want.

But don't you think, Rick, in the way OLYBLOG unravelled a couple month ago and you and Jason left on a sour note, that before taking/feeding his content on Olyblog you should first talk to him and try to fix things up? There's still a lot of sour air around, and even if on the internet we're all avatars of ourselves, we're all living in and serving the same community.

Man, we cross each other on the street - this needs to be worked out. Especially if you choose to use his content, rightfully or not to enrich your site.

Do you mean that Jason feels taken for granted?

Jason decided that he knew best what should happen for this community and attempted to coerce and then bully me to resign from OlyBlog. In a final act of betrayal, he published private communication without permission. He completely ignored the fact that, while he produces copious amounts of content, he didn't make OlyBlog work. I do that, and it takes hours every day, work that is almost completely hidden from view. If Jason feels like he's not getting recognition for his work, then I say: welcome to the club.

In order for me to feel at all like conversing with Jason, I'd first need a public apology for his name calling, bullying, and publishing private messages.

Short of that, S6 suggests (by email) that the rss feed include a tease and links, which I think is correct. (I just hadn't gotten around to it because of dealing with other childish behavior on the blog.) My intention was to build a shared resource for the community that would lead people to all sites in Olympia.

Two things

First, I think it's common courtesy on the internet, that if you use someone's content, you email them and tell them about it, ask them, thank them for the article. Especially if you do it on a regular basis.

Secondly, I think if you're at such odds with Jason, I don't think it's right to use his content.

I'm not "using" his content...

...OlyBlog's readers are the end users.

wow this is fun

Rick, I'm done.

I said what I needed to say. Keep doing what you're doing, and believing what you're believing.

You know where you can find me.

I believe...

...that sharing content benefits everyone in the community, regardless of personal differences.

If Jason wants to talk, he knows where to find me.

Credit

As long as the writing is freely given out on the Internet and credit is given to the writer, what's the beef? If you want to protect your work, don't put it on the Internet for free.

I found out about OlympiaStandards.com or Everydayolympia.com through Olyblog. Consider it advertising.

agree, its not stealing, its the internet

RSS feeds are what they are. If you don't want people linking to your site, automatically or otherwise, then don't publish a feed. Though, not publishing a feed would be lame.

As near as I can tell...

...you'll have to adjust your rss feeds so that they don't output full articles, but just a title (link) and teaser. That's not something I can control from this end.

thanks. we will let you know before!

I made the adjustments on both blogs.

They should show up as teasers now, not the whole article.
